I raised a litter 2 years ago and had 9 and just like you I had a little runt male that was half the size of his littermates.After watching him stuggle for the first couple of days and get pushed around by the bigger pups i was going to cull him out as i figured 8 was plenty for her to raise.Well my wife raised a fuss and tolsd me "you BETTER not,that would be so cruel!"So of course I didn't.Today that pup is a 14 1/2 " big male who can absolutely get after it.
Last summer I raised a litter and sure enough had a tiny little runt female.Well she sure isn't ever going to be very big [8 months old now and about 12"] but she is an absolute whirling dervish of hunt,search,jump and rabbit running little dog.You just never know.

One of them is. It already has a lot of brown on her head. I think she'll turn into a red dog. I'm not sure.

I've got one female that looks just like Leah and I've got one nice male that looks like Junie it has the similiar markings.

he is still going strong. he got a good belly full of milk before the others pushed his little butt to the side. They are all twice his size....lol

Hey Joey,congrats on litter, sounds like that little pup might just make it, GOOD LUCK!!! You really are doing everything possible to keep him alive, I would do the same . My cousin had the same happen, and he raised that runt,she wil be 11 to 12" full grown, but at 6 months ,she is already running cottontail and hare with the big dogs. So keep up the good work, and what is meant to be ,will be. It is really great to see all the work you put into your dogs,most would give up mush easier, you can tell you really take pride in them.

looks like nothing I can do. The runt keeps making its way away from the rest of them. Its still alive though. I'm gonna keep trying. I never give up.

i had a litter once and the mother kept pushing 2 of them away n i would put them back in pile on a teat that mother eat those 2 pups never bothered none of the others that made me sooooooooooooo pissed i almost shot her but was told by a old timer thats nature of getting rid of any smell from preadtors good luck on a beautiful litter jb

joey i noticed in the first picture you still had a collar on the female,i read in a past post that a guy had a pup get get hung in a collar ruttin for milk remember that they cant see nothin and they are rootin around ever were tryin to find milk,i have ran with junie and he is a great hound,so good luck with all your pups

Her collar is removed. Thanks for the reminder its been off since after I remembered reading about the one guy having a pup get stuck in it.



Little Booger died tonight. He just wasn't eating like the others. I even went and picked up puppy milk and a puppy bottle. Didn't work. I tried to feed it to him but he just wouldn't suck it down. I'd put the nipple to his lips and he wouldn't do anything. When i first found him yesterday morning he was way off to the side and cold to the touch. He was probably pushed away from the get go. but I warmed him up and got his breathing undercontrol. I also got him to drink a little lastnight but it wasn't ever anything like the others he did get a good belly full last night. when one of the other pups latches on to a nipple they stick on like a vacuum and that little runt just couldn't. So I guess it was just meant to be. It didn't hurt to try and save. I tried. Nothing else I could of done. Poor little guy.

the other 7 are doing great. Nice and fat and drinking momma dry.

Joey enjoy the rest...i just had a bitch have 2 then nothin....turns out she had 7 more in her and almost died from a ruptured uterus...we tried to bottle feed the first 2 runts but they were just to weak...good luck!

I'm sure these 7 pups will keep leah and myself busy for awhile... Leah has been a great momma dog so far. When the pup died she gently grabed him with her mouth brought him nice and close and began to lick him up. She tried. it didn't work

Joey I had a litter born once and they all looked super healthy. They were all strong and fought like crazy to get to the teats. I don't know what it was to this day but not one pup seemed to have a sucking reflex. The whole litter wound up dying because they wouldn't nurse.

I had that to happen twice years back and my vet was the best i ever seen on advice on raising beagles he told me to never touch them for 3 days no matter what he said moving them around and picking them up was crucial why idk but i just took the advice and knock on wood i havent lost a pup in 20 years he said let mother nature in the moma doctor and take care of them i never even know what i got for 10 days -2 weeks we can carry diesease on us and give it to the pups he said we could pick cocidious off something another kennel has carried to wal-mart give it to pups at 3 days old and they want show the sign til 12-14 weeks old allways santize befor touching pups
