It's as simple as feeding something that keeps the dog in a condition you are happy with...but how high are you're standards is the gut check i've found..

What are you spending on raw diet (time & money)?

I have a dog that has been hard to beat everywhere I take her. She is eating Pride.

If I switched Her to a raw diet would she be unbeatable?? I doubt it.

     Hey buddy you have a nice dog congrats i'm happy for ya...ummmmmmmm......hope you feel better now that you got that off you're chest. Maybe you can get a banner on you're truck and get sponsored by pride with that tough dog. Maybe you'll be on the cover of a magazine with a big bag of pride dog food in front of the bench beside a big ol trophy. just maybe..I'd put a dead chicken beside mine if i owned a hard to beat dog unfortunately i don't i guess. Lol just foolin ya you made you're point i made mine. Good luck with that dog. I'm not trying to bash the food I did'nt like it thats all i tried to explain why i guess either way people would disagree b/c they do like it. I can debate all day long thats fine i'm on here b/c i'm bored anyhow. Lets throw stones over dog food :check:

It don't cost me much, getting the bone saw scraps from a grocery store butcher a few blocks away. Canned peas, carrots, and green beans don't cost too much either. It takes alil more time to prepare, but 20 minutes and the dogs are fed fat and in the box for the night. Kennel Clean up time makes up for the extra time preparing the food. maybe 1 stool a day in the kennel per dog some dogs less. I have a 13inch female it seems like every other day some days. Coats look great I'll post some pics as soon as gun season is over for deer and i get the dogs out again. They look good shiney. Buy cheap hamburger when it goes on sale. 8oz of meat i feed a day with some other stuff mixed in depending on whats in the kitchen cabinets. I'm still playing around with different things. I'm feeding less now than i did on kibble food. I like it it works for me for now. just constantly washing my hands is a pain b/c of the raw meat handling. Freezer space is the issue that butcher will give me and a buddy a 50 lb box twice a week. I sold my deep freezer a couple years ago...ooopps, wish i would've known.

sorry this thread got hijacked i'm done on it before it turns into another run to catch type deal. I thought these boards were for discussion.

been feeding pride for years and is some of the best food for a working dog you can buy.it holds up hounds good when you hunt them often and get good stools out of it.I feed green bag and pay about $22 a bag.I feed my rabbit dogs and deerhounds pride and keeps em looking good.

I've been feeding Pride Endurance 24/20 in the black bag for a while now with good results. I fed Diamond Premium and Maintenance for years, but it just got too pricey. The Pride seems to be about the same quality but a little cheaper. I get the black bag for $17.25 a bag.

Well I have been feeding the pride 26/18 for over a month now and I am very pleased with the results so far. The dogs are keeping weight on them and look great. I have been running two to three times a week have run hare all day three times in that month and the weather here in Michigan has been sub-zero several nights. Thanks for all the replys and maybe if I can find more time and freezer storage I will try the raw diet.

I've been on the Pride for quite some time now and have had the same results as you. The one thing I will agree to is it would be nice to have a few less stools like ohlinger says he gets with the raw diet. They're not numerous or out of control, just would always be nice to have less to clean up.

And don't worry about the raw diet Mike......only people that actually care about their dogs feed that. ;)

Not too hijack this thread but i seen a couple post about guys that they used to feed Hi-Standard. Why'd you switch? My grandpa used to feed it and never had anything bad to say. I'm feeding a Purina blend now and i dont like it too much, energy levels are too low. I am thinking about getting a couple bags of Hi-standard and trying them out.

I know there was an old thread on here with a bunch of guys saying that they had changed their formula but then they said it was switched back. That is what I know about it and the guys I know that feed it like it for the most part.

Well guys I have been a Sportmix fan for years but I just found Pride 24/20 for 17 bucks a bag, compared to 22 for the Sportmix at bulk price. I have been happy with the Sportmix but the price difference was too big not to try Pride. I picked up ten bags to give it an honest shake, time will tell.

Interesting how the main concern is price per bag or how the cost of raw compares to dry, to feed a dry feed that I consider "good" which there are three I think that I have personally used that I would rate as "good"and they are far above 17.00 per bag- more like 40.00 to start! I feed raw exclusively and have for at least a couple of years, I have not kept perfect track of cost but I can tell you right now it costs me about 2.00 a day to feed three beagles and two Bichon Frise maybe a fuzz more but not much. The big thing is time-- it takes me around a half an hour maybe forty five minutes to prepare the feed and get the dogs fed which when compared to about five to ten minutes to dip a scoop of kibble and pour it in their bowls is a sacrifice so to speak but does put you more in contact with your hounds. So for me to compare what I fed dry which was Canidae all life stage formula Chicken and Rice which cost 42.00 for 35 pounds to ground beef which cost me .28 per pound or 14.00 per fifty it is quite a bit cheaper. Now the cost per pound will be a little higher because I add a calcium supplement, powdered fish and other ingredients such as egg, oatmeal, and beef fat from time to time. I would dare say that the cost would still be cheaper per pound even after these were to be figured in, and really you have to ask yourself- What do you think would be a better feed? When you look at a bag of kibble next to a bucket of ground beef, fish, egg, etc. the answer is really simple. Kurt

all depends how many you feed, raw diet is great if you only feed 3 dogs.

How so? If you are referring to the volume used dont you use more kibble with more dogs or am I missing something. If I fed say ten dogs I would have to premix feed say at least once a week to streamline the process but other than taking more time I dont get how it is great - only if feeding three dogs. You have totally lost me in one sentence! Kurt
