I wanted to stay within one line, but all the best dogs I know of have Outcrosses, so I just decided to breed to the best I could find regardless.

Dont know. I gave that up, too much work, effort and money for little hounds that chase rodents in a circle. If I would go whole hog I would train working dogs of any breed.

You better have several good running areas close, pens, patience, a deep wallet and a shovel.

Hey preacher,
Define suit you???????? or could it be good enough for now

I'm pretty hard to please in rabbit dogs  Hopefully, everyone is breeding the best to the best in hopes of getting better, so who knows what someone will end up with later on down the road.

One thing to keep in mind though when looking at greener grasses on the other side of the fence is that normally the greenest grass always grows over a septic tank

Depends on ones definition of a deep wallet. I personally do NOT think it is that expensive to do what Preacher is searching for and I spent over a $1,000.00 on my foundation male and female 8 week old pups in 2004. There is always running space if one looks for it and isn't afraid to ask to run on others farms, etc. I have never used running pens. I use my backyard to start my pups. It works great.

I can't read that Preacher!

However, upon reading everyone else, I have decided you asked how many dogs do you need.

Easy.......YOu need at least 1 new one to hopefully teach your's how to run.

I wish I had 8 but I have 10.

I think you need 4 to 5 adult hounds and a few pups in training at a minimum if you are serious about developing a line and I prefer to limit the outcrossing. I focus on two lines that impress me and then look at outcrosses that I like as required. To each his own, this is just the way I do it.

Hey Preacher,
I'm scratching my head, but I'm pretty sure ol'Buster is from a similiar line your running. I'm willing to check with dad, but I'm pretty sure he would be willing to run him against another dog to see how tight and fast he can move a line.

Remember though you ain't got a thing if you ain't gotta little swing

I can't say what you guys need but I must have 12-14 running hounds to get through the season. If the season was to open in the morning I only have 10 to hunt. I usually hunt 7-12 dogs at a time. If it's just a couple partners and myself or just me, I take 7-9. On a big hunt or an out of town trip I take the traveling squad of 12 with two alternates. Very seldom will I mix dogs with my buddies. They either run their pack or I run mine.

During the summer months like now I run 3-5 dogs including rookies and pups.

Preach,

When my buddies run or hunt their dogs with me they come with big heads and leave with deflated egoes. Either their dogs cant hold up all day or they can't maintain the pace all day or both. They run med. speed spo dogs and I run hard hitting little pack and large pack dogs. It's like mixing oil and water. Not only does it make their dogs look bad it puts a strain on relationships. So we get along by not mixing. Then there are a couple of guys that have trashy dogs that I simply refuse to run with. So it's not a problem for me. As a matter of fact, I'm outta here. Going to drop a pack of 4 this evening.
