Anyone in Tenn. have their magazine yet? My fears are that Cincinnati has lost the "bag" that would have gone to Memphis, or that Memphis still has them shoved it the back and hasn't released them to the sub-stations for distribution. I have approximately 85 subscribers in Tennessee so it's really important that I find out if anyone has gotten theirs or heard of anyone else in Tenn. getting their magazine. I'm trying to determine where to start - Cincinnati or Memphis.
I'll keep you updated and I may have to re-mail the entire state.

Beverley,
I got my Feb. issue around 2/15 here in western NC. I am anxiously awaiting the March issue!
Here is a thought:
I would not mind paying say, 20 to 24 bucks or so a year for the mag. The best beagling magazine on the market is well worth $2.00 per issue. Would this aide in using 1st class postage? What does everyone else think?

Darrin, brace yourself. First-class postage on one of these magazines is $1.75 each. To Canada it's $3.10 each. You could pay it if you wanted - I could send them first-class and the majority of them would move along, but the USPS will not even guarantee Priority Mail. They have a means to track it because it's bar-coded, but they don't guarantee anything.
I was told by a mailing service (not my own) that the USPS admits to losing between 5% and 13% of the mail.
I've heard from folks in regard to different mailing situations (receiving January sale fliers in Feb.) and I really think the mail is in a terrible slump right now for some reason. My guess (and hope) is they will rebound to their normal service soon.

I can relate to the USPS losing mail! I had not 1 but 2 different AKC transfer applications and 2 checks lost by the USPS. It cost me a real headache, going back to the former owner, getting him to sign a letter requesting duplicate certificates, another 15 bucks, going back again to the seller to get the newduplicate certificate, then sending the certificate off again with another 15 bucks! Not once but twice, within 6 months.

Darring, are you so sure the post office lost the mail or did AKC misplace it? Too often we blame the USPS when in fact it may be mishandled at the co. or org. that we mail to. It is so easy to blame the mailman or the policeman or the whoever for the way somethings happen when in fact they may be doing a great job. As to the Post Office losing 13% of the mail. that is just not true. I worked 34 yrs at the USPS and have some knowledge of their operations. The TAB was delayed mainly because it is mailed at the same rate as the sales advertisments you call "junk mail" I have suggested to Bev that she mail periodical rate as other publication and newspapers. Periodical rate mail is always worked first before STD Rate mail is. Periodical mail is sacked in a different colored sack to be seperated from std rate mail so it can be processed first or before std rate mail. Periodical mail is processed most times along with first class mail and always just after 1st class at a much cheaper rate than 1st class mail.
I would be willing to pay a higher price, as I am sure others would, for the TAB to be mailed periodical rate.

And first class valentines take 10 days to go from city in IN to the next?
I understand where you might want to defend the USPS having spent your life in their service and I'll be the first to say it's still the best buy in the free world for 37 cents. I'm just not convinced that the more expensive periodical rate gives any better service yet. After all, The Rabbit Hunter, & Better Beagling and others utilize periodical mail and their magazines don't seem to move any quicker than mine for the most part. I get my BB about the 15-18th of the month. I've talked a couple of the owners of the other beagle magazine (I won't say which) and their story is the same. They have to replace magazines every month too, due to mishandling, or just not being delivered, or being delivered so late that the customer has called repeatedly and it's easier just to send a second one than lose the customer. They just aren't as vocal about it as I am.
I'm not ruling out going periodical mail, though - still tossing it around. I didn't qualify before and I haven't fully investigated it lately. I can tell you this - the way I feel this month, if there were a competitor to the USPS for this kind of service, I'd be getting quotes right now. What you're hearing about this situation on this board doesn't equal a small fraction of what I'm dealing with off-line. It's been a bad month. Folks calling at the dinner hour all the way up to bedtime and I don't turn those calls away - I talk with them.
I also believe for each person that would be willing to pay extra for postage, there are ten people that have to think hard about spending $16 to take more than one magazine. There's a lot to consider here and I'm just gonna have to sort it out.
I do appreciate all the feedback - positive or negative.

Richard, you could be right about AKC loosing my papers and not the post office. I called AKC repeatedly and my bank, and my checks were never cleared or deposited so I had to put a stop-payment on them and do this all over again and then some. We all know how much AKC likes their funds (
) but they never deposited my checks and insisted they never received them. I guess it is possible AKC could have lost the envelope before ever opening it, and not the post office. And I am like Bev, at 37 cents it's still a great deal!
