Dogs being attacked!!!!!!!!!!!!
Moderators: Pike Ridge Beagles, Aaron Bartlett
I lost a hound summer before last. Heard him make 2 really strange squeals, only about 75 yards away. My other 2 hounds came back with tails between legs. I walked all over the area for days with snake chaps on and never saw any trace of him.. He was wearing an e-collar and I tried going there in the dark and trying to locate the flash and no luck. Never saw a snake, but on later trips I heard yotes howling immediately after the hounds opened on a rabbit. I carry a .22 w/ 9 shots every trip. Had one that day, too. I'm fairly certain that was what got my hound by the way the others were behaving. Curious as to what you guys think???

I'm Gonna Go a Huntin
I live In central vt and we have a huge coyote issue Huge. We are allowed to hunt them year around and at night with out use of lights. That isnt enough!!! We are staritng to see coyote derbys one of them has been anual for 5 years now. I personaly have been lucky not to have had an attack on hounds but know a guy who has and with tracking collars on it happens that fast that you cant do anything. I know I have posted about coyote issues under hare season on news from the north you can read that about other issues with coyotes. I will add this I have been tring to trap cottintail in a abandon pasture next to my home. started first snow and located about 6 differnt bunnies and every day coyote tracks are more and rabbit tracks are fewer and down to only one rabbit left. We got about a foot of fresh snow 2 days ago and its full moon I went out to check the trap and found in that pasture where a coyote had run a deer down and jumped on it in that pasture on fresh snow hair was everywhere and a huge puff was in the snow!! the deer got up and ran from that attack but the coyote was still running after it. I followed for a while and the track went up the mountain so I left them. I took a hand full of hair home to show my wife she couldn't beleave it! We hear differnt packs almost nightly comming from 4 differnt directions. I am going to try the meat ball thing for real this spring. sorry to hear about all the loss you have all endured and I go along with every rabbit hunter should take one day and hunt coyote!!!! Happy hunting all!!!!!!!!!! just my 2 cents

goopslaw, I'm not sure I would count on 2 15" beagles standing their ground against a coyote. Heck I wouldn't count on any beagle standing their ground against much of anything except another beagle.
I have seen 2 big males kill a yote in a foxpen, but they would both fight. I think that if the dogs in the pack will fight they should be okay with one. Seems everyone hates a dog that will fight, when this is a time when it would be a good thing...My 2 cents...Mark

Goopslaw and a couple of others have the right idea......coyotes coming into your area is bad for running hare or rabbits.....but its a great opportunity for running coyotes!! Yes beagles can run yotes, and if your worried about a bay up throw a couple of strong dogs in the mix (like an airedale or two) it will only take a couple of hunts before coyotes start bookin out of dodge when they hear hounds comin. From what I understand the yotes have to associate the hounds with bad things about to happen, which is why trapping doesnt affect how the yotes view dogs. Up here we dont have a big yote population yet......but we do have wolves. There are isolated incidents with them but for the most part they dont mess with anything to do with humans, and thats because a bad wolf like a bad coyote gets dead up here.....they arent protected.
It's not that life is short......it's just that we're dead for such a long, long time...

It may not be plausable for every beagler but if there are enough guys living close together and each got a large hound such as a plott or walker and got together one day/night per week and put the run on them yutes they will soon learn to vacate the area when they here hounds running. I don't think you can eliminate yotes from any area for long but you can educate them. Just a thought guys. 1 more dog to feed but maybe many many beagles could be saved. Plus you can get hooked on running yotes. It's FUN Hare

Wolves
Used to be you worried all the time about coyotes in the UP. Now you REALLY have to worry about wolves. Bells on your beagles don't help at all. They're actually more of a dinner bell for wolves. A guy I know lost 2 of his beagles to wolves this early Fall and his friend lost 1 dog. They've also killed bear dogs up there again this year. The thing is, they're not unusual, they're pretty common now; and you can't do anything about it. You can't kill them. It's a Federal offense. The same guy I know who lost 2 beagles, swears that they're starting to key in on beagles running rabbits in his area all of the time now. Others I've talked to say that they're keying in on their big hounds also.
