Hounds trailing on scent alone, WHAT A CONCEPT!!!....we are fascinated and even awestruck at the ability of these hounds to pursue game in such a way that we would never be able to do ourselves.

Yet we put rules, limits and requirements to hounds on what they are suppose or not suppose to do. On something we cannot do.

Perfection as Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.......one man's cull is another man's FC, RCH, HBCH and vice versa...

PJ: Not so. I've already told about the fastest and yet accurate hound I've seen who would in fact beat anything I've ever owned and who was capable of running check free and how I've seen her do it. I've also related how another hound ran so fast and check free that my own hounds dropped out of the chase because she left nothing for them to do so they went and got their own rabbit to run. I owned the second hound and saw her run check free many times and she was not and could not in anyway have been mistook for wlaky talky even by you.

John: I don't know how to post pictures here and my digi cam still isn't working either. When I get it fixed maybe you could e-mail me how to post them. Got a real nice pup to show off.

Sue: There are in fact hound actions known to promote the chase and others known to hinder the chase. If we leave field trials aside and personal preferances aside and just concentrate on what does and does not work we will be way ahead of the game. You'll note above that I site a hound who would beat anything in my kennel. I would not want her for hunting because we run rabbits and she was so fast AND accurate the rabbits would run straight to hole before we had a chance to enjoy the sport. BUT, that is my personal preferance and she was no doubt talented and done everything right and in a trial she'd whip any of my hounds. I would not find fault with her though and I just prefer hounds that the rabbit will run in front of. It is important to note that rabbits would not go more then a single circle in front of her on those occassions when I saw her run. But talent she had.

Yep, If she was talented, fast, accurate and ran every rabbit quickly to hole then that was a BIG fault in my book and she wouldn't have been worth a plug nickle to me.

Maybe I'll go out and fill in all the holes around here and I'd take that dog for a plug nickle or two!!!! .............LOL

joe i think theyre beginning to pick on you a little here so im rootin for you. i cant agree with you about the cold trailing thing but i admire what i call stick in a man or a dog . i saw some dogs run yesterday in heavy wet snow and i guess i heard them make 4 short losses all day . snow was covering up old tracks . now if these mutts could run like this the other 364 days in a year id be real happy with them . there is a lot of truth in alot of what joe is saying. running without checks is my goal also and it doesnt have to be a slow dog that does it . ive seen a few foxhounds run like that and it will make your hair on back of your neck stand up, ive seen beagles do it on certain days when scent was real good, this should be the goal in breeding beagles not trying to outrun your buddies in a foot race. pete

Pete: 4 short checks in a full day of hunting is real rabbit dogs! Regardless of the conditions.
