If you have the Sportdog Tek then there is also a vibration mode on the collar. It can be used to get their attention if they did not respond to the tone and before using the shock function.

Once you get one dog tone broke most of them pick it up pretty quick.

Deerhost & rcoff said it all. That's what we do & we don't have to hunt for our dogs very often. I will say I prefer to not use treats but occasionally a really wild or a timid pup responds much better starting out but I stop using them asap.
