That results in PHENOTYPE breeding. Breeding unrelated animals towards a goal of improved likeness. Lots of variables and hidden faults never seen, but low consistency in production and no gain in future predictability.
GENOTYPE breeding, related individuals descending from distant common individuals "family breeding", narrows the variables, exposes the faults and weakness to allow culling & increased purity of the family.

The difference between breeders and hobiest is, breeders know faults exist, hobiest believe faults are created. jmho

I keep hearing the close breeding advocates talk about having such a great handle on breeding yet the results never seem to surface anywhere.

It seems to me in a world where everyone wants the best and are willing to pay for it that you family breeders would have a lock on the market and be dominating the beagle world but that's just simply not true.

I do see lots of close bred dogs that all look the same but a close look at them will tell you they don't look quite right. They lack that look in the eye that tells so much. Maybe I've gone crazy, but I've noticed it getting even more pronounced the longer a kennel of dogs are bred in?

I've talked to several Beaglers about it and most see what I'm talking about but would never speak out on beagle board in fear of reprisal. Perhaps it's just one of those topics that will always be divided.....

I think some of the best breeding is using the best hounds with similar bloodlines, but some go overboard & breed too close & end up with very poor results. Sometimes an outcross can really hit; especially if they have some of the same ancestors several generations back.

When you say, "a lock on the market and be dominating the beagle world", are you talking about field trials?

Is the "look in the eye" you mention, the eye of intelligent demeanor?

Without names and examples I don't know what your talking about painting with such a wide brush. Maybe with names and examples I could agree with you. "Several beaglers speaking from behind the curtain hold little merit or credibility, if a man won't put his name on his opinion but allow it to be used in reference to quality beagles. Like the hounds you say you've seen, we don't know their qualification or experience to judge. jmho

MyBeagles,
Private messages are blocked from this site somehow.
The Veterans parade was great today, two and a half hours worth. You would of enjoyed it and all restaurants, Nationally know chains too, had free meals for the Vets that could show their ID and some even included the spouses.
Some how my spouse of 52 years found an old ID of mine dated 1956 and we showed it to the management and both of us ate free!
Old Jarheads still get some respect!!!!
Thank you for your service!!!

Thanks John,

Had a great couple days running dogs with two good friends. Can't imagine having more fun than I did. The older I get the more I appreciate trips to the woods with old friends.
