I lived in New Hampshire where we would get -25 below and always kept hounds [coondogs and beagles ] outside. They can stand the temps. if they've got a good tight box full of straw where they can get out of the drafts.I often would put an old piece of carpet over the door opening.Feed them extra chow when it's real cold and make sure they have water or feed them their chow real wet. They'll do fine if they are healthy and in good shape. If they're wormy or generally run down you can loose them when it gets frigid.
I normally keep my dogs one to a run but if it gets real cold I'll double bunk them and this will keep them comfortable. You've heard of a 3 dog night, right?
It really bugs me when I see guys keeping their hunting dogs rough in the winter. You expect a lot out of them so make sure they are taken care of.hounds are pretty hardy critters but any houndsmen should owe them an adequate shelter.Especially this time of year.
Supposed to hit 0 here in Tn. tonight .Just put an extra bale of straw in their boxes.Sleep tight beagles! We're not going hunting today!

All my boxes have straw or chips in them and a flap over the entrance. I have some pups, two days old, that have a heating pad in the box. I checked this morning and they were fine. I have another litter, two weeks old, that don't have heat in the box but the entry compartment has a couple of 60 watt light bulbs. I put feed and water inside the entry compartment for the two bitches with pups, so it wouldn't freeze.
