Re: sick hound!!!
I'm NOT a veterinarian but have performed many internal inspection of food animals over my 30 year career. If the thorn had been in the dogs foot for some time to the point of it not coming out quickly then I suspect some type of blood poisoning. The body tries to fester to expel any foreign matter but when it can't it tries to fight off infection via the lymphatic system and when it can't the infection then becomes systemic or into the blood stream. It tales a little time but when it gets there it then can move pretty quickly. The thorn itself was already bad enough but if it was contaminated with some other chemical or bacteria it would be even worse. Then another possibility is the Vet or anyone for that matter digging on it to try to remove it without using sterile equipment. They then add another bacteria, expose it all to the air and make the ideal situation for rapid bacterial growth. It is kind of like folks going into what they believe to be the cleanest place there is to have surgery and then almost die from some sort of staph infection. I witnessed this when my dad had open heart surgery many years ago and got a staph infection that they couldn't isolate to treat with antibiotics and was out of it for 6 weeks. Some strains of bacteria are highly resistant to many antibiotics and in my dad's case there was only one antibiotic that they finally found that worked.

When we was kids, we used bacon fat wrapped by a rag to draw out splinters and briar/thorn from our feet.
I use Epsom salts dissolved warm water on the hounds to draw out infection and thorns, soak the foot 2X a day for 20 minutes it will draw it out.
Sorry you lost yur hound.

Hey Patch, I still use a lot of those old type remedies on myself and use Epsom salt for soaking my feet. My granny always used the bacon grease soaked rag to draw out boils as well and she mixed up butter and alum for a cough when we had colds. I still keep all my bacon grease but it's use has been converted just like the steak over the black eye to cooking and eating!
