Kjohns, No one in the cast had any problems with the way it was judged.

Jim and Bart, you had good judges for considering hound A for second place. I was in a cast once when another hound had 2 strikes but couldn't award jumps because my hound was with him, actually in front of him but he was getting the strikes because he was opening quicker with hard chops. I had no problem with the other hound getting the points because that is the rule. The two races were short, mostly two hound races, mine and his with no breakdowns. The final score in the cast was 20-0-0-0-0. The problem I had at the end was with my hound coming in 4th, with a hound finishing ahead of him that was only seen two or three times during the hour with the handler having to holler his brains out to get the hound back at the end of the two runs. Judges, consider not only search and handling, but which hound is actually on rabbits during the hour. This is the only time I have mentioned this in public, and it was a long time ago, and I hope I don't come across as a whiner. I shook the judge's hand and thanked him for his effort.

D. Ramey,
I was not at the hunt described, just trying to answer the original question.
I also agree with you, in the placement of the second place hound. I think alot of times, judges don't consider the whole hunt when placing dogs without any points at the end of the cast.
Thanks,
Bart

DRamey, when I judge a cast of hounds I look at hunting and handling during the cast but I will also watch how the hounds are running the track if a hound is driving the pack and doing it right or getting alot of those short checks but just isnt in the right place at the right time to score and at the end of the cast and I have to place some of them on hunting and handling I will place this hound above ( say another hound that handled and hunted harder ) because he was running more rabbit. I think this is the proper way to place hounds in my opinon as you can tell by the way we placed them in the cast described in this post.
