To get an accurated reading you need to make sure you clear tracks or "Start new hunt" other wise you will end up with yesterdays track spped averaged in along with the ride to home if you leave the units on.

5000, on the link below you will find a pile of hare dog speeds mostly in snow. If you will notice, Mcardery2k started the post and has alot of useful ideas on hope to get momentay speeds like sight chases by loading the tracks onto the computer. Maybe Mark will join in and offer some info.

The avg speed will increase on the Alpha because it updates every 2.5 sec instead of 5.

Does the Alpha use quicker battery power because of the increased update rate?

That doesn't make any sense....X amount of distance covered over Y amount of time gives you the speed calculation....both units use the same technology so there will not be a significant difference between them.

I don't see 2.5 seconds having much effect on this. However, if you look at guys that use 20 second update, or 1 minute update rate, then that could have an effect (I'm not sure if anyone even uses that long a time frame). In 30 seconds, my dog can cover alot of ground, then end up right back where he started before his collar updated, essentially giving him a speed of 0. But 2.5 to 5 seconds really won't be much of a difference.

The reason it is different is because when it updates in 5 seconds, the dog can go from point A to point B and back to point A in 5 seconds. When it updates in 5 seconds the dog is still at point A and never records that it went to point B. The dog avg speed and distance traveled is higher because of that.

Over the first 5 miles with good running it is normally 6.9 to 7.1 From 5 to 10 miles it is usually 6.4 to 6.8. Over 10 it is normally 6.3 and down.

Gotcha....must be a cottontail thing....a hare isn't likely to double back too much with a fast pack on him.

Finally found my camera....this is a typical half day of running

After 20 miles or so they start to lose steam depending on the conditions so the miles rack up slower.

I know some guys were curious on the real time stats. We had a site chase on Saturday, and our two females almost caught the rabbit before he hit a junk pile. It was in a wide open field right in front of us. I marked the time down so I could check later, I was also curious as to how fast the dogs could run. They both hit 24 mph on a 5 second update rate on the collar.

In my opinion, this doesn't tell you if a dog is "fast" or not, b/c I'm sure most can haul the mail on a site chase. Still interesting and pretty impressive how fast a tiny little beagle can move.

A slower chase with less breakdowns is gonna be faster than hit and miss at high speed. For whatever reason my hounds show faster averages with the Alpha than the Astro
