Re: Sportmix
I fed Green bag Diamond and Black bag Sportmix for several years, to beagles and coon hounds. Both were good at one time, but are not the same feed any longer. For the last year, I have fed the PRO SERIES PRIDE, green bag in the summer and orange bag in the cooler months. Best feed I have found in a long time, chicken and rice are the first two ingredients.

Re: Sportmix
This dog food is junk I feed it for a while, couldn't keep weight on the hounds
and even had a female beagle start haveing seizures never had them before
when I switched to a natural feed from Diamond naturals Beef no more sezures so I tell the lady
at TSC about it and she was going to tell her manager and they still carry the junk.
I will never buy anything with the word Corn in it again.

Re: Sportmix
I feed the same year around and even for females with pups. Never had any problems with this Pride regardless of what color bag I feed. Only difference was a little more stool. I have also tried Sportmix, Hi standard, Sexton's, Diamond, and many store brands such as what Rural King stores sell. The only feed that I actually noticed a BIG difference in the dogs appearance was with the Diamond. I always look at the bang for the buck and so far I've yet to see any real advantage from one feed over another BUT of course I don't work my dogs daily either. I'm sure those that hunt em hard will have a different experiance.mowhawk madman wrote:Black bag 24/20 Pride year round n mine always look great n ready to go! Not knockin any other feed just sayin what works for me n mine! Almost seems funny how feed manufactuars seem to pick same colors for the mix dont it?

Good enough for me, I'll stick to my Black Gold & Pro Plan Performance!

Re: Sportmix
I've fed Sportmix and the Pride for a number of years now. Both deteriorated and I've had to move up a notch on the the blend/price to keep the hounds fit. The 24/20 sportmix has held up and the orange and lime green pride is good. Sportmix has what is called "pro pack" blend if you want to spend more money for better feed. Not all feed within a brand is created equal, the ingredients/quality cost more for better stuff. They make it with no corn, you just have to pay more to get it.
One other thing, and this is just my opinion. If your getting seizure flair-ups from types of feed your feeding, this is a warning sign your on the wire with your breeding. Better back up and look into your pedigree, your getting a hound/or hounds with the gene to close.
Bud told me of a hound called Moon that produced pups with seizures and they put them all down "or maybe not". Moon himself got seizures as he got older, he had been neutered after it was found in the pups.
Just digging up old bones but maybe it helps...

Re: Sportmix
I've been feeding black bag sportsmix for about 6 years and never had any issues until about 3 months ago. I noticed my dogs had less and less stamina. They come out of the box to hunt and start eating grass. Their coats are looking rough also. I started feeding pro plan shredded lamb about a week ago. Has anyone else had luck on pro plan shredded lamb. I know we have beat this topic to death but I just want honest opinions. I heard there is better dog food out there but the suppliers are to far away. Those who feed the pro plan in any form please respond. Good or bad. Also how does the pro plan weight circles work to get coupons.

Re: Sportmix
I've fed 24/20 Sportmix for about 6 yrs.I noticed several months ago also that my dogs wern't keeping weight on well and I wasn't running much due to the heat. And they wern't looking as slick as I like.I also noticed some grass eating going on also.I haven't switched over completely but I have 4 on the Pride 26/18 orange bag. They have been on it about 3 wks.I can already see a big difference, they are holding weight good and I've been running them hard, coats look good and shiny, they have plenty of energy.I also have 2 on Victor 26/18 and they look and act just as good. The Pride is a better price, I 'll switch over when I run out of the Sportmix.A friend of mine feeds pro plan and has for years, won't feed anything else.I'm not sure how the weight cicrles work but it is good feed.

Re: Sportmix
I have fed Sportsmix and the worse thing I noticed was poor coats and some of that nastiest looking runny poo I ever seen...
Victor dog food is what I feed now and its hands down the best food I ever seen. Can't keep food in their bowls... They love it!!!

Re: Sportmix
gunner, I feed pro-plan performance. With the pro Club coupons it comes out to about $1 a pound. Not exactly cheap, and if I could find a better feed for less money I would feed it. But I feel that it is the best for the money. The weight circles on the Purina bags are worth points per pound, For instance if your weight circle is worth 11 points per pound than a 37 pound bag would be worth 407 points. when you accumulate a certain amount of points you can redeem them for coupons . You have to be a member of Purina Pro club though which does not cost you anything just sign up. As far as the feed is concerned ,Like I said it is the best for the money that I am aware of. I can't get by with anything that I have tried that costs less money. One thing I have noticed is that if you are let's say feeding Dog Chow or something similar and then switch to Pro Plan performance Some dogs will not only show more energy but run about a half step quicker.
Re: Sportmix
Thanks for the replies. I was going to buy pro plan performance but they were out. How much do you feed each dog. I have one pup on purina healthy morsals and he is slick as a bear cub. Do you think there is a big difference in pro plan performance vs pro plan shredded lamb. Casey, I looked into victor but it's about 2 hours round trip and the Toyota T100 is not the best on gas.
