Augerhead,to me hunt is hard to find in a dog what i call hunt.Just because a dog leaves you and you cannt see it dont mean it is hunting.A dog can stay in seeing distance and be hunting it tail off, dont have to go a mile and then hit a red hot rabbit that been out moving. But that just me,i do agree with you about a dog having something different that it does that makes it stand out.

THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTON TONY83 IS YES,YES,YES. I MAY NOT BE HONORED TO OWN ONE RIGHT NOW BUT BELIEVE ME I HAVE
AND HAVE HUNTED WITH SOME OF AS NEAR PERFECT DOG'S AS A MAN CAN FIND. STORY, SEVERAL YEARS AGO WENT HUNTING ON ANNUAL THANKSGIVING MORNING HUNT. HUNTED ABOUT THREE HOURS. JUMPED 5 RABBITS. KILLED 1. OTHER THAN ONE KILLED
EVERY RABBIT RAN AT LEAST 20 MINUTES. CAME HOME WITH FIVE DEAD RABBITS, RIGHT 100 % OF JUMPS.
HOW, ONE SHOT, FIVE DEAD RABBITS.
ANSWER, TWO DOGS THAT RAN RABBITS SO HARD AND SO TIGHT THAT THEY CAUGHT 4 OF THEM ON THE GROUND.
QUESTION CAN A DOG RUN A RABBIT THAT HARD AND THAT PRESICE.
ANSWER YES.YES.YES.
I KNOW THAT THERE ARE DOGS THAT CAN FOLLOW A RABBIT AND THERE ARE DOGS THAT RUN SO AGGRESSIVE THEY SPEND MORE TIME OFF THE TRACK THAN THEY DO ON THE TRACK, BUT THERE IS ALSO THE DOG, THO VERY RARE THAT CAN RUN A RABBIT AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED AND HARDLY LET IT HAVE TIME TO BREATH.PERSONNALLY WATCHED A DOG RUN A RABBIT ON A 90 DEGREE DAY, IN REALLY DRY WEATHER, ON OLD STRIP MINE WITH HARDLY ANY COVER TO HOLD SENT AND NEVER MAKE A LOOSE. THIS RABBIT CAME UP IN FRONT OF SEVERAL MEN AND RAN DOWN A ROAD ABOUT 15 YARDS AND CROSSED AN OPEN PLACE ABOUT 200 YARDS SWERVING AND CUTTING BACK AND FORTH ACROSS THIS AREA.THIS DOG CAME UP RUNNING, I SAID RUNNING, WITH HIS HEAD LAYED BETWEEN HIS SHOULDERS AND THE SKY, NEVER MISSING A BARK OR MAKING A CHECK. DOWN ROAD AND ACROSS OPEN AREA AND NEVER WAS ASTRADDLE OF THE TRACK BUT EVERY WHERE THE RABBIT TURNED HE TURNED WITHOUT MISSING A BEAT, OR BREAKING OUT OF A DEAD RUN.
QUESTION, CAN A DOG RUN A RABBIT LIKE THIS.
ANSWER YES,YES,YES. BUT NOT ALL.
DON'T SETTLE FOR LESS AND BE SATISFIED. I'M NOT. I MAY HAVE TO HUNT WHAT I'VE GOT RIGHT NOW, BUT IT'S NOT BECAUSE I BELIEVE THEY ARE THE BEST, JUST THE BEST I HAVE RIGHT NOW. MAYBE I'LL LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO SEE ANOTHER ONE LIKE SOME I HAVE SEEN BEFORE AND MAYBE NOT. BUT YOU WILL NEVER GET ME TO SAY I OWN ONE , TILL I CAN SHOW YOU. SIGHT CAN MAKE EVEN A KENNEL BLIND MAN SEE-----------

Amen BB this is what I have been trying to convey, Nothing wrong with trying to have the best you can find. If a man is happy with less thats ok, but an average dog that hunts good and can stay after a rabbit is not what turns me on.People get so caught up in defending there average dog, they settle for there faults. Don't fault a man for wanting more out a dog than the givens, expecting more is to me a part of seeing alot, evolving with experience. Nice post Bart! :D :D :D :check: :check:

The ones that I call good all have one quality in common, they don't just look for a rabbit to run and jump it and then run it.They try to catch them, and after they get them up and running they are still trying to catch them.I've been arround a few dogs that everyone that hunted with or saw in the field would call Jump Dogs. They wern't trying to jump rabbits, they were trying to catch them.On days when the rabbits held tight they regulary did catch some on the jump.Alot of times if they didn't catch them they would have fur in their mouths it was that close. These dogs are few and far between,in 40 yrs.I can count the ones that could consistently do this on one hand, and if I'm honest have a few fingers left over. These Catch Dogs as I call them, the ones I'm refering to wern't the best running dogs arround good to average on the line at best.I think that they were so specialized that it was hard to excell at everything.I'm sure that there are dogs out there that can, I've just never been lucky enough to see one in action. Then there are the dogs that when the rabbit is up and running keep constant steady pressure on it with very few breakdowns,or checks ,at a fast enough pace that if a rabbit dosn't go in a hole they will catch it.That STYLE of running is what I'm striving for....At times I've had it but everything has to fall into place and be perfect. If a guy could do this consistently I think he could say he had some good RABBIT DOGS.....Everything else would be beagles that could run a rabbit.Enjoued jour post BB.

The 2 things that get under my skin the most is the dog will not listen and over barking, they are for sure to get a dirt bath.I like a dog with brains, drive, speed and line control, that can bring the rabbit back to me fast as they can, thats fine to get checks but make them short ones.I know my dog are not perfect but they sure can run a rabbit good and hold there own with any pack. LYNCH MOB KENNELS

If I start a pup at 5-6 months and they haven't improved on their hunt say by nine months or ten months, they go. If they hunt hard, I will keep them until they make me think other wise of keeping them....
And what bloodlines and stud dogs do you think have and throw these qualities the best Casey?............................. :D

Guys, Why don't we do this, Why don't we post video clips of dogs running and then ask if what we are viewing we would call " good" . Everything is so subjective. What you call a 7, I may call a nine, what I would call very little over-run you may call excessive, you get the point. Let's view some clips so we are all on the same page about what we are talking about, it doesn't even have to be your dogs just a clip of dog's running, otherwise we can't be sure of what each other is saying!

I have seen a few off of Runner. I have heard that Bachman's Tuffer Than Yers does it nicely. Scottmi on here is Scott Bachman so you can contact him. I did see some nice bred Green Bay Shooter dogs do this as well.

Jake Havens and Matt Glomski has a dog they call Glomski's Big Time that can turn with a rabbit. I have a young male out of Glomski' Little Skipper and Kimbrel's Callie Grace that will turn with the rabbit and will shut up when in the check and when they over run over the line they shut up...

Also I ran a young male Neil Kimbrel that would shut up in the check, shut up when he over ran it, and could turn a track easy. He was out of Kimbrel's Kick em Up Kane and a Durbin Valley Hitman Hart bitch....

A good dog is hardly a dog you are happy to feed and own. In pet parlance maybe but not in the beagle world to which we all portend to belong. I have seen many people happy to keep a fat little pig beagle and say "he is such a good dog". If you own it, feed it and call it a good dog and it can't run a rabbit out of the living room, it is not what we are talking about. Just saying. :-o

This is a hard question to answer. We have different ideas of what some qualitys are. For example we all like fast dogs. But fast to some means blazing foot speed. To me it means fastest to circle the rabbit (or most efficient). I have run with dogs that people say have big nose and found out that they dont.
I have now in my kennel a truly great bitch. Every dog that comes in is measured against her. So far none have stayed. Friends say I judge to harshly. I feel that I wont have better dogs if i keep worse. Maybe I am doomed to failure.
I do have a young bitch now that is promising... This brings me to a question.- Some people keep alot of dogs. I find it difficult to keep 4. Are they settling?
