Re: Bred them today
So you're saying the pups that refuses to crawl to the rabbit scent are the ones to cull? Have all the dogs you kept by this method turn out to be good dogs?
Re: Bred them today
new kid on the block, I made this post just to kind of call Brad out. I have never heard of anyone keeping the dogs that crawl over the line, In my opinion that shows a lack of nose. I heard from another buddy of mine that Brad was keeping the ones that went over the line as he felt that they were going to be the faster harder hitting dogs, which he likes. well, everyone is entitled to their opinion and he will be feeding them not me. but, a 100 years of testing on coon hounds and Beagles in this area is not wrong and the "crawlers" are clearly showing a lack of nose, and just an overall disregard for the scent. Brad and I have discussed this before and I told him then as I am saying now. You can't find an old timer around here that will keep a crawler past ten days, I have seen them cull the entire litter and I have culled as many as I have kept. of course as always I could be wrong, If Brad wants to keep the crawlers it would be interesting to see how they turned out, good experiment, never seen one kept. yes, nine out of ten that I keep will be good ones. In fact If I am going to buy a pup from someone and they offer them for sale at 7 or 8 weeks or so I will not buy one. It is just a gamble and there is no way of telling a good pup from a junker at this age. but if I know I am going to get one in advance I will go to his house and use this method before they are ten days old. will work every time. Don't let anyone tell you they can pick a good pup later than ten days old it cannot be done!
