Horse meat in dog food ?

The law to ban the slaughter of horses is not that old and i would venture to say maybe 5 years or so. One of the biggest horse slaughter plants was in Illinois and they fpought to keep it alive. Yes, this transpired as it was stated that it was unethical to eat one's pet. After the politicians realized that having no where to take older horses and the countless trucks headed into Mexico to slaughter they started to reconsider. I was not aware that the ban had been lifted as of yet but knew the debate had shifted more to the side of allowing it. The Regulated horse meat slaughter industry has been 100% for export and a pretty lucrative business as you could count on one hand the number of them in existance before they were banned. There definately needs to be a place to take them to be able to put them to good use be it human or anumal food. As stated before what is taboo here is the norm elsewhere and vice-versa.

Ya might as well use them in dog food cause ya sure cant sell the hay burners. Wardog is right once slaughtering stopped the horse market is terribly down. I always wanted to be hung like a horse but prefer not to eat one myself. Just Saying. I dont think my dogs would care as i have seen there own crap. Once again just my personal opinion

I worked at a horse slaughter plant down the road from my house when I was in high school for extra cash. They paid me $5/hr to clean the stalls....man some of those horses that came through there were plain gross but others looked and acted like real nice ones, either way they got the pin to the head when it was their turn in line. Some of their hoofs looked like elf feet and lets just say cleaning the stalls wasn't the best idea for income but somebody had to do it and it paid for a ton of Bush Light and Totem Pole chew.
They slaughtered and sold the meat to overseas companies....not sure why the plant finally closed down but it still makes me gag to think about the smell of the "blood trucks" that picked up twice a week.

LOL Ohiohntr,
the smell is one of the things that took some getting used to and once you thought you got used to it for one species of animal the USDA sent us to a different one. The smells in the hog slaughter plants I thought were bad until I trqansferred into a turkey slaughter plant and I didn't think I'd ever get used to it. After about 4 years I about had it licked and then transferred into a plant that slaughtered cattle, hogs, sheep goats and buffalo. man it was ALL different again with not enough of any one of them to get you used to them. I think the worst I smelled in that plant was a water buffalo that smelled like an OLD gym locker even when it was dressed out. I'd totally have to get past that smell bnefore I could have gotten it ate. I'll tell folks another one that is pretty hard on the proboscis to me and that is domestic swine boar meat. It is illegal to use in and fo itself for human food in federal plants due to it's very strong odor. It is actually comingled with regular pork so as to be able to be used in sausage and luncheon meats.
