A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
Chuck, are you suggesting AI? I've always tried to let nature have as much say in the process as I'm comfortable with but I'm ready to try anything. Every year I have several young males that no one wants to purchase and I don't need so it's hard to keep the kennel down to a mangeable number. Maybe I should move to Ohio??? Patch, I had hoped you'd have a magic wand for me. LOL! Harebawl, how did the trial go at Eastern Maine? You guys sure did a good job there last year. Aaron, I have high expectations for Stella's pups on snow- sure you don't need another male?
Sorry Steve, no magic. I have found that in times such as these, kind jestures to young boys or girls who have the "itch" for a beagle, are often rewarded down the road. One boy I gave a coulpe of male pups to, sold 3 more for me to his older hunting buddies. A couple of the nicest males pups were traded to other patch breeders to get more of the Lazy Acre's breeding. It is a time to do the best with the hand you are dealt.
Best wishes...Patch
2 years ago I bred a bitch, she had 11 pups, 2 females, 9 males all blanket back in color. This Spring I bred the same bitch to the same dog on the same days-- I think -- and she had 11 pups 2 males, 9 females all blanket back in color. I doubt man has a lot to say about any of what goes on that he can't see in the K9 world.
Patch, I've given a few to local hunters provided they join our club and contribute. One time I gave a couple of pups to a young fellow who told me a good story, then I found out he later sold them for $200 each! Kids these days!!!! Jack, I'm going to hold you to your promise!
Steve: No just natural but breed only ONCE AS SOON AS SHE WILL STAND (and don't blame me for a miss or a litter full of males!). It may not work for you but I am sure enough that I always breed early (when it is on purpose anyhow - LOL!). Best wishes!
Steve C. wrote:As a matter of practice we always let the dogs determine the best time to breed. Once we see signs that a bitch is entering her cycle, she is tried with the proposed stud every other day until the 10th day, then daily til they tie. A second breeding is done 2 or 3 days later. I've had bitches tie as early as the 7th day and as late as the 15th day from the first sign of blood. I keep track of each bitch as to which day they first stand in order to optimize litter size but so far it's been of little use. On the plus size, my tiny 11 1/2" bitch had 9 pups (first litter) and all look healthy, so I don't want to sound like I'm complaining. Aaron, both these litters are by Mac.
Steve my male, and females, are always together, and when my kate came into her first, and second heat, I put the male in a pen, and kept them separated until the heat was over. On her third heat, I just let them together, and I was beginning to think he was too dumb to know what to do, and finally one day I heard her yelp, and sure enough they were tied, and she had three females and two males.
Steve, if you have a surplus I am sure I could find a dog house for him somewhere. I would really like to see old Mac run before he dies, maybe run his son with him.
We had a great time like last year doing the 13" bitch class! Alot of really nice dogs to look at! This year the brace T and L Tall Pines Sarah and Shinnecock's Misty's Dee Dee.....I'm pretty sure I got the spelling right.... It's always a preasure to judge with Bill. Not too many times while your judging, you almost don't want the trial to end. Alot of really nice hounds!
The brace wasn't as head to head as last year as the running got quite tough towards the end of the day, a little slower pace, but impressinve non the less!
I made out good in the 15" bitch class, took 1st, 2nd and 3rd! Also won Kennebec with my Tish dog, that was all she needed to finish! I feel I had just about as good a month as I'll probably ever have...
George, congratulations on your great month! Glad to see you finish them- you've earned it! Hope you can get down here hunting this winter- there seems to be a bumper crop of hare. October is OK but come down in December for a real test of the hounds. Last year January was a bust but the second half of February and all of March were outstanding if you had a hound with nose. We had about as good a month of March as I've seen. We either killed every hare that Mac, Stella and Major ran or picked up at dark, but they never lost a track the entire month. A memorable hunting season for sure!
harebawl congrats on your 1st 2nd and 3rd place.i didnt get a chance to see the 15 bitch class a i was in the 15 inch male side trying to keep up with Manny to try and understand judging alittle bit, i should have jumped over to the other side and see your hounds run.
I have been wanting to get back up that way hunting....As you know we used to hunt up in that neck of the woods quite a bit. I think downeast Maine is quite under-rated when it comes to hare hunting! Of course there are ALOT of good hare grounds in the state, but downeast always had lots of game for us, and I also preferred the terrain alittle better! My most memorable trip rabbit hunting ever was Feb. over in the Love Lake area!!!! One of those days that nobody would believe if you told them about it...... Maybe this year I can make the trip, but, you know how busy things can get and how fast time flys. We haven't had to travel much the last couple of years too far, the hare in So. Maine seem to be on the upswing, plenty of game last 2-3 winters! Glad to hear you are happy with the hounds you are hunting, like you, 90% of the time we shoot every rabbit they start. It is a good feeling when they do it consistantly like that in most all conditions! We hunt just about every weekend, even Jan. and Feb., thats when you see what you have for a snow dog!!!
Thanks JR, I hope you picked up alot following those judges around!!
