Re: Do your rabbit dogs hit on woodcocks?
I run alot on public hunting areas, they have a pheasant release a couple of times each season. Drives me friggin nuts, dogs just cant seem to leave them alone. I will light em up if I know thats what they are messing with and I won't shoot them over the dogs. Thing is that those farm raised birds fly as a last resort so it sounds like they are running a bunny for a good ways.We have alot of woodcock also but they don't seem to mess with them much.

Re: Do your rabbit dogs hit on woodcocks?
there was ALOT of woodcocks this year where I run the dogs, they would flush one or two every so many yards it was rediculous! This pup of mine he's popped off on them a couple of times and quail also, they must smell like a rabbit because thats the only offgame mine will pop on. I will shock him if I can actually see thats what he's running because it would kick my butt in field trials lol. But ive also heard people say that housecats and bobcats smell like rabbits because dogs love to run them, ive personally never had that problem but I know a guy that has a bunch of beagles and they loveeeeee housecats. Thank god for tri tronics is all I can say!

Yes. They hit on woodcock last year at the end of season, a few quail this season and we have lots of turkeys here in Missouri and they have hit on them as well. I have figured out when the track just blows up and I didn't see the rabbit it was a turkey, woodcock or quail. I had a beagle at one time that would briefly point quail before she ran through the covey. I wish I could have got it on video.

Woodcocks don't run far and I think dogs just love to see them jump up. Usually that happens quite close to the dogs. I is just a fun thing for them.
