Re: hope i can get an answer!
thanks for your post bucks better, but to clear things up, i seen her run rabbits at 4 months old when i was running my dogs with her and her owner i got her probaly at 7 or 8 months and hunted her twice with the same dogs that i had her kenneled with before end of season, cause thats who i do the majorty of my hunting with, and she was solid. now what im having trouble understanding from everyone is the fact that i had her put up and she wasnt ran i never stated that, fact is she was ran several times over the summer and did what i seen her start doing at 4 months, it wasnt till the first day i hunted her this year that she acted like that. now i know most run the trials on here, although interested in it right now im just a gun hunter, but being realistic, i cant run my dogs everyday or even every other day like some probaly do . we have done our dogs the same and have never had a problem where we had to have them out everyday to make them average or above average dogs. this is the first hound iv seen act like this after they had been doing so good in the start. normally dogs progress and get better over time not the other way around. im afraid she might mess the other dogs up if she dont straighten out. maybe it was a freak day, dont know but il find out soon enough, thanks
Re: hope i can get an answer!
high maintance dog ?
i got one if i dont run her till she cant run full speed any more she can be a disturbance
but if i do she will carry the mail on a pack i would put her on ground with any male or female
so sounds like she is gonna need ran 3 or 4 times a week insted of just on weekends jmo

Bodetis: it sounds to me as though you are trying to answer your own question. You may not have enough time to spend straightening this dog out. You may want to keep older dogs that require less run time.

CHAMPIONS ARE MADE NOT BORN!! Don't matter what the blood is and if you don't lead a horse to water it can't drink
Re: hope i can get an answer!
all this from one trip. patience. 1.5 years old , she is still a pup , run her a few more times and see what she will do. the older she gets and the more running she gets the better she will be, i just hope she gets better at what you want her to.if she is not hurting the pack let her go. if she hurts them tt. best of luck with her.

Re: hope i can get an answer!
To me it sounds like dog barking. take her by herself and see if all her barks accounts for rabbits or if she is just popping off (babbling). If she does fine and accounts for all her barks with rabbits. throw her back to the pack and see if she gives all that extra barking. If she does I would bet on that she is running other dogs. My dad always told me, just because they start fast doesn't mean they will make the best dog. To those who think you cant lay a dog up for a few months and still have them be the same dog. I hate to say it but it probably wasn't that great of a dog to begin with. A real rabbit dog is going to be that same dog know matter what. the only thing that they will need will be getting back in shape. Growing up after march 31st the dogs weren't hunted again until dec. 1st. I promise you known forgot how to run a rabbit, granted come dec. 1st. They were ran darn near 5 days a week until march 31st. that went for young dogs and grown. now I run year around, now that I have gotten older. but whenever I here guys say they cant lay there dogs up b/c it wont be worth a crap afterward or laying there dog up ruined it. i'm skeptical on how good the dog was in the first place.
Re: hope i can get an answer!
thanks jwagner and i feel the same, although she probaly could have been ran more, we have never had to run our dogs everyday or even most the week after they were broke for them to stay good solid dogs, again i just gun hunt rules may be different for trials. but as for the pack goes she did mess the pack up, at times she would take off screaming like there was a rabbit and pull the dogs andf i tthink on one occasion there was a rabbit but rest of time nothing. it was the first time me or my buddy seen that from her. i know dogs have their days but she acted like she lost her mind that day. i appreciate everybodys opinion but i know everybody on here would have reacted the same as me if it was one of their dogs. im gona take some of what everyone has said and work with her hopefully it was just a freak thing thanks

Re: hope i can get an answer!
so what your saying is a dog is gonna be a dog no matter what?? Do you think Kobe Bryant or Jordon or wilt Chamberlain got as good as they did by only shooting a ball for a few months out of the year?? That's like saying they only practiced when they played in a game hince a dog running only when you took it out a few times then layed it up for months after that!! I bet if any of them ball players did that they wouldn't be worth a Sh!t just my opinion but I bet a dog that gets ran more and more often will be better than your 4 month a year dogsJwagner wrote:To me it sounds like dog barking. take her by herself and see if all her barks accounts for rabbits or if she is just popping off (babbling). Re: hope i can get an answer!
Never said he was a bum just simply stated why he didn't have a good ending and I don't care who you are if you have a young dog and it gets layed up for many months and only gets ran a few times it ain't gonna be any where near the skill of a dog that's been ran and not layed up!
Re: hope i can get an answer!
john03272005- i will stick to your example of nba players. Bryant and Jordan are exceptional players. but there are other guys in the nba that practice just as much and are average. translating to beagles, you will have exceptional hound who get run all the time and that is great. but I bet more guys on this board who run all the time have more average dogs than exceptional ones. Because if all the guys who run all the time all had exceptional hounds they would know longer be exceptional. I'm not at all saying if you run a piece of crap 4 months out of the year. It will be anything different after be laid up for long periods of time. It maybe worse. but when guys tell me you cant lay up a solid dog for some months. that they forget how to run a rabbit or it ruins them is crazy. But that goes into a whole other topic of standards. what people consider a solid dog.
