mtthwvn73 -- To respond to your question of what is a grade dog worth. As you can tell by the comments there are lots of personal opinions on this one. Grade dogs and papered dogs have one thing in common, no one can honestly say what a dog is worth. Too many variables such as: How badly does a person want the dog? How much disposable money will the person part with? How badly does the person want to sell the dog? et al. I raise linebred Gay dogs and place a price, which is firm, on my dogs. The price that I place on them is their value to me. Long story short..... Like any other commodity or service, a dogs value is no more or no less that someone is willing to take or pay for it.

DJC said: "The way the economy is I dont think you will get more then $100 out of a grade dog no matter what the ability level. In a lot of areas people can get grade puppies for $50 or free. Versus an AKC registered puppy for $200 and up.'
DJC and any others with this opinion, I live in Michigan, you can PM me. If you have a grade dog with ability, call me. If you have some for free, I will take them. I also guarantee you, I will pay more than $100 for a good dog not matter its looks or pedigree.
I would NEVER pay $200 for a puppy regardless of what it is out of. A puppy is a crap shoot. I have owned too many to ever buy an unknown quantity simply because its daddy had papers of some sort.
Now, having said all this, I will also buy GOOD pedigreed hounds but only if they meet my expectations which are pretty high.
I have room right now for two dogs that will do what they should do in a foot of snow or so. Call me.

I have both and they all have good and bad points. If you want to compete then they need papers, if you want to kill rabbits then you can do this with both. I have to agree it is a little harder to sell ANYTHING right now. I have to say I have sold more lately for less because feed, fuel, and just about evrything has gone up but my pay! Ha! I like dogs that hunt and ones I can turn out anywhere and do not have to worry about their actions. Enough of my opinions! Kerry

I guess it's all subjective, and depends on what your short term and long term objectives are as a beagler.

Re: Beagles Without Papers
I have been buying "Little Pack" style hounds the last couple of years, I like that style of dogs (what can I say)? Anyway a guy called me the other night and had a 14 1/2" 2 yr old GRADE female he was needing to move quick! (needed the money). He set his price $150 and then brought her to me, I did not nego. at all. He had bragged on this gyp in the past and I figured what the heck, I will see first hand what she's about. I hunted her this past Sat. and I be damned, she took the front and pulled 20 yards on my boyz and held it. MY MOUTH DROPPED! When I got home I called him and asked if he had anymore he wanted to sell.
My dad always said "papers" don't run rabbits, but they sure can help sell a pup! Needless to say she will be getting reg. ARHA asap and will hit some trials this year. I hope that run wasn't a fluke!

Re: Beagles Without Papers
People here still equate the AKC dogs with Brace Field Trials. Many won't even look at one for sale. A non registered dog will get more folks to look at it than if you advertise it as AKC registered. Dogs sell for what of their ability matches the buyers needs or wants. That is all that matters.
ARHA, like UKC registering local grade dogs has helped some too.

Guys, Thanks for all the good advice. People around my neck of the woods I don't think would even take a beagle that isn't registered. Just about a month ago I lucked out and got a good papered pup for cheap (Skyview's Abby Lane X Johnston's Pro Singer) She's a really pretty pup, and I've been working with her at least twice a week to get her ready for next season, but we are also planning on raising some pups and since he has so many right now he's wanting to get rid of some.
Again thanks everyone for all the advice...maybe I should tell him that people are willing to buy before he takes them to the pound, lol.

Re: Beagles Without Papers
About dogs and pups being in low demand at present. I am beginning to think that there is more to it than the poor economy. I do believe that the loss of places to hunt or run dogs along with many reports of so few rabbits has dampened the wish to own a pack of hounds. I do know that once hunting dogs get into your blood, you are always on your way back to them. Looks like this year will find Beaglers with more dogs/pups that they need or want.
Re: Beagles Without Papers

Re: Beagles Without Papers
The best dog I ever owned was a grade 13" male. I was new to AKC and bought into the idea that registered dogs were better. I sold him for $400 and consider it the biggest mistake I ever made concerning beagles.
Extreme hunt, good snow nose, very smart, ......tried to buy it back, offered $800 and the guy wouldnt sell it.
A guy gave it too me as 6 week puppy because he couldn't sell them w/o papers.
