Madcatter,I still think it's unreponsible to set next to a parking lot. Here in Mo. we have laws dictating how far a trap has to be from an occupied building'no traps set in paths used by people and no conibears bigger than 5x5 set on dry ground. We lost our use of 220's for coons due to person's setting in fence opening ,when it was legal, and killing a hunters dog.Just because it was legal doesn't make it right.Like I stated, trapping is under the gun every day and things like this reflect badly on our sport.I don't know how many times I've had farmers I trap on tell me their dogs never leave the yard and I caught them the first night.I always tell them that any set for a fox, cat,or coyote will catch a dog if it comes along.Trouble with trapping is lots of people, mostly youngsters, start setting traps with no clues. That said,I would agree,if you don't want your dog caught don't hunt there.Oh and if you touch anothers trap or kill an animal in anothers trap in Mo.,that will get you a ticket.

We had this conversation in Feb. Check out the old post titled Snares at Addington Strip Mine Ground.

I just took the trap off my dog and loaded my dogs and left let the trap lay. I would never destroy some ones property I didn`t mean to start any thing on here just wanted to let people know about the trap in the parking lot as for me being aganst trapping im all for it. But to set a trap in a parking lot right were we unload dogs is a little stupped in my book. What if it was your son or daughter that walk over and got in it would that be ok or would you be mad. My dogs are like my kids there apart of the family and i would never put a trap right in a parking lot were theres going to be a bunch of hunters unloading dogs i have more sence then that.

In Missouri, the trappers do NOT have the same "rights" to use public lands as do hunters. A special use permit is required to trap and the game wardens have told me that under no circumstances are land sets permitted. The special use permit requirement is posted at parking lots.

I have pulled traps that caught my dog and turned them in to the game wardens. If I find some and my dogs do not get caught, I trip them and call the game warden to tell them.

It is my opinion that trappers should be courteous enough to post warnings.

I guess I personally would rather have my dog get caught in a trap where im close enough to get to him right away than out deep in the woods where by the time I get to him he's either hurt real bad or dead! I don't. Want my dog in one period but they have as much right to be there as we do

rinkydink,In Mo. the game wardens have no say on who can set traps on a Conservation area, that's up to the area manager. They can set footholds if the area manager allows it.Usually nothing over the size 1 1/2 or dogproof traps most the time.I hunted one area that a guy was targeting coyotes and was allowed to use size 3 traps that had rubber inserts in the jaws. When I found out(I didn't touch the traps and my dogs didn't get caught) I contacted my game warden to see if someone had a permit to trap there. You have to apply for the permit 30 days prior to season with the area manager. The game warden had to call me back as the area managers don't have to notify him.Yes a guy had a permit and I just waited til after trapping season to run there. So if in Mo. if you want to run on a CA and you think it might allow trapping, just contact the area manager and you can find out. Also in Mo. your not allowed to touch anothers traps or bother his catch.

i agree with mafia man 100%---it may pee some off but its part of life and being in the woods,if ya dont want to take that risk then stay in a club fence grounds.
i would be more disgusted with folks breaking glass bottles,or dumping roof shigles with nails and etc than someone who is legally doing what they choose.
the dog i had get in a trap before hunted after we took it off--no damage

I hate to extend this, because I it is a touchy subject to some. But How much different would it have been if your dog was caught 20 yds, 50 yds, or 300 yds from the parking area. I'm guessing it was baited with some kind of scent, what are the chances if it was just a blind set. My point is it is all about prespective. I'm glad your dog was 'fine' , but in general most trappers try their best to avoid domestic catches. As houndsman, it is a chance we take every time you unleash. It is the same with your chances with your dog getting hit by a car, attacked by a yote or wolf, or even stolen.
From a trapper and houndsman I'm sorry for your dog having a sore foot. For those against trapping or resentment, I encourge you to learn more about it's benefits and spend a day with a trapper. More rabbits, pheasants, and ducks are saved by a trappers steal. If you doubt this I will take you rabbit hunting in areas of MI that in all right should hold good numbers of small game, but instead are so filthy with predators.
Just my 2 cents
