A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)

to answer your question which would I rather do you already know the answer = shoot bunnies.
and i've bought from both rabbit hunters and field trialers. both have made great rabbit dogs for me.
Contra monswear, You Breed to a rabbit hating gun dog that just happened to be a fc.........I never thought there was a difference in the two, still dont.

I want nothing but RABBIT dogs! I like the ones that hate rabbits and want nothing but to catch them at all cost. If a dog has good hunt, speed, and nose you can take that dog anywhere and run it under any condition (trial or gun) and be proud of it. When it comes to trails its important to know what speed and style works for your dogs.

all i know is i like to trial but i would never take a dog to a trial if he couldn't run a rabbit and bring it back to the gun. i trial more than i gun hunt but i was a hunter long before i ever trialed. i gun hunt my trial dogs and trial my gun dogs.
let honesty run through the veins of each and every judge at each and every trial at each and
every format.
Got a couple qeustions, Mybeagles wrote " dogs just sit in kennel and get fat and stupid the other 9 months of the year" I assume he is talking about gun dogs. Well mybeagle if you over feed them they will get fat and they only get stupid if thats their nature, meaning stupid to start with, I don't know you, but a dog might get out of shape and maybe a little rusty. If you lived here you would or should I say be weary about running hounds in the summer because of the heat, snakes and gators. When it cools down it might take a week or so and they snap back if they are worth their feed. Next I do not trial dogs so my question would be if there are many differnt formats and styles of dogs if you lumped them all together which type hound would come out on top. Meaning best rabbit dog. That what we are after a rabbit dog, are we after ribbons and trophy's or both. Not trying to start a uproar, I can see that most here love these little hounds and some like them fast, some like line control, some like medium speed with line control, some like walky-talky style. I do not know if any of mine could win a trial but when it was over people would be talking about them pot licking lap dogs that like to watch TV.
I guess I have to say I am a hunter first who likes to attend trials. I dont go to that many but I do enjoy them. I happen to have had some succesful hounds that have performed well in trials that are my hunting dogs.
My answer to your question is this, I want a dog that hunts hard and can circle a rabbit with good speed but does not overrun his nose, has brains and rabbit sense, is not to mouthy and handles. I dont ask for much LOL and I would take them up from whomever has them hardcore hunter or trialer.
Trialing is supposed to be about rabbit hounds (gundogs), if it is not then something is wrong. I was a hunter long before I ever hit a trial. If your not breeding for a true gundog you probably have motives that are not improving the breed. Yes, I know trial dogs sometimes get over competitive over time. I am not blind. I won't even attempt to answer the question as I think it is ridiculous, as many posts I see on this board. Pretty much seems to be the same people pitting one dog against another, one format against another. Now it's hunter versus trialer. As I have always said "run what you love and love what you run".

I have hunted all of my life. I have trialed all of my life. I have always used the same dogs. I would not keep a dog that could not do both.
To me, it is about producing the best all around hound possible. I want a dog that I can hunt on one day, take to a trial and be competitive the next, and sit on the tailgate and run all day the next. Having said that though, I would NEVER keep a dog that I could not rabbit hunt.
Im not saying trial dogs are better than gundogs. What I am saying is a good trial dog gets run more on average and have performed in front of so many people that will expose their faults and earn their reputation if they are that good.
I run dogs year around. Many times when I convince the gundog owners to get their dogs out in the summer the excuses fly about their dogs being rusty and out of shape. Thats the owners fault, not the dogs.
When looking for a dog to breed too, I can go see a trial dog run just about any time of year and not have to listen to excuses about their dog being out of shape.
As I stated, their are likely some AWSOME gundogs sitting in a kennel somewhere that will never be known.
If you own gundogs your proud of, get them in the woods year around. Yes its hot, thats why I dropped dogs at 0400 AM today. Had to quit by 0800 because of the heat, but my young dogs had some nice races.
