Re: Wompass Cat stalking my dogs
I guess this is a dumb question, but, what is the purpose of keeping it a secret?
Had a big cage type bear trap put close to my house and denied there was a bear nearby. WHY???

Re: Wompass Cat stalking my dogs
I find this real interesting that so many people have had experience with large cats. I live in eastern ky and
have never seen one. I seen a picture of one from a trial cam from a neighboring county, but thats it. I hope I
never do see one. I dont know much about them but what documentation I have seen on them is they are all cougars,
also known as puma, mountain lion, mountain cat, catamount or panther. There are several different sub species in
north america but they are all types of cougar. There hasn't been any actual documented black panthers in the us.
No expert , this is just what i have i read. They also average over 100lbs to 200lbs and have weighed in well over
250lbs. Now that is a big kitty. If I had them near my running grounds like you have been seeing them I would find
some other place to run, cause your gonna loose a dog before its over. I have heard that kentucky doesnt reconize
them as a native species and there are fair game, yet they are endangered through the us fish & wildlife. So I would
definetly find out some more info, or just take care of the problem, no need for big predators in the states is the
way I see it.

Re: Wompass Cat stalking my dogs
Years ago, my uncle had some dogs that would run wompass cats and wind weasels. I never saw either but he told me he caught a wind weasel in a butterfly net because if there was the slightest bit of wind, they would just get away from the dogs by flying. Sure enough, he told me the one he caught, had webs between its body and legs and was about the size of a cat. He told me the wompass cats came out to spy on his wife who was having and affair with the man in the next hollar. I don't know but it sounded good at the time.

Re: Wompass Cat stalking my dogs
They say that the Wampus cat used to be a beautiful Indian woman. The men of her tribe were always going on hunting trips, but the women had to stay home. The Indian woman secretly followed her husband one day when he went hunting with the other men. She hid herself behind a rock, clutching the hide of a mountain cat around her, and spied on the men as they sat around their campfires telling sacred stories and doing magic.
According to the laws of the tribe, it was absolutely forbidden for women to hear the sacred stories and see the tribe's magic. So when the Indian woman was discovered, the medicine man punished her by binding her into the mountain cat skin she wore and then transforming her into a terrible monster - half woman and half mountain cat. Ever after she was doomed to roam the hills, howling desolately because she desires to return to her normal body.
A man was hunting one night with his dogs when they both whimpered and ran off the path. At that moment, the woods were overpowered with a horrible smell like that of a wet animal that had fallen into a bog after it messed with a skunk. Then something howled on the path behind him and the man whirled around, dropping his rifle. His heart pounding with fear, the man found himself staring into the big, glowing yellow eyes of the Wampus Cat. The creature had huge fangs dripping with salvia. It looked kind of like a mountain lion, but it was walking upright like a man. Then it howled, and the man's skin nearly turned inside out in horror.
With a scream of terror, the man leapt backwards and ran as fast as he could through the woods, the Wampus Cat on his heels. He fled to the home of a friend who lived nearby, and burst through the front door only a breath ahead of the creature. His friend slammed the door in the face of the Wampus Cat. Instantly, it started shuddering under the weight of the attacking monster. The man's friend grabbed his Bible and started reading aloud from the Psalms. Upon hearing the holy words, the Wampus Cat howled in frustration and then slowly abandoned its attack and went back into the woods.
The man spent the rest of the night at his friend's place. When he went home at daybreak, he found his dogs huddled in the barn, shaken but still alive. The man never hunted after dark again.

Re: Wompass Cat stalking my dogs
Buschbound, that's the same story that I heard from some of the old timers as well. Pretty scary stuff...I talked to my buddy Chad today and he came and got a couple of my trail cams, and was gonna set them this afternoon after he got off work. Hopefully, I will have some pics in a day or two.....

Re: Wompass Cat stalking my dogs
I find this hard to believe. I haven't heard of or seen a wompass cat in years. Then tonight while running my dogs, I see one, come home and read about them on this board. The one I saw tonight, in Sampson county North Carolina. I think, it was a young one because it had some spots, that were kind of yellow. Does anyone know if the young have spots? Or do they all have spots?
I had my 357 with me, but my hand was shaking so bad I couldn't have hit the ground, so I didn't shoot.
Caught up my dogs and came home.
