John, have you ever had a dog be like a kid and be so intent on what they're doing that they don't hear you very well? Now what if that dog is hunting hard under some brush with a breeze and he's 60 yards out and can't hear you yelling his name? I never really thought about it until last night when I went out with my buddy and he was over hollering for one of his dogs. I bet we weren't 75 yards apart and I could barely hear him through the brush and with the wind blowing unless I stopped walking and listened...........you don't think that ever happens to your dogs? Especially for guys that run hare cause those dogs can get out there quite a ways. I think they get their head down and get to hunting and the rustling they make while they're hunting can drown out your faint voice calling them in sometimes so a little beep right next to their ear tells them they need to stop and listen for you so they can come in. JMO and you may not agree but I don't think it's a bad thing.........just one more tool to help your dogs out. I will agree that if they don't come whether it be the tone or you yelling then they need to get juiced..........assuming they know what come means in the first place. Disobedience is disobedience no matter how you slice it but I'll bet you've shocked your dogs before because they weren't coming without knowing they just didn't really hear you in the first place......it happens.

And I just paid $545 for my 2 dog tone/shock collars and I love em. I don't trial so my dogs can wear the collar anytime I want them to...........not all of us attend field trials, some of us just hunt and run dogs. Also, once their broke I no longer use the collar..........it's a training tool not a control tool. If a dog "has" to wear a collar to be out in the field then I don't want it. I've seen some of em and you can keep em cause I don't need em.

Come to think of it back in the day they never used ecollars to break dogs from running trash and what not so what do we even need them for now??? JK In all seriousness I think it's a good thing. I had it once, have gone for a while without it and have since gone back to it and there are times when it is nice. I don't always have to use the tone but when they get out there it seems to help get their attention sometimes.

Like bb said it does nothing more than get there attention while im calling it stops them to listen and head my general direction while im calling. As far as trials go my dogs listen to me in the field by calling for them just as well as they do in the field the tone is nothing more than a attention getter and reinforcement tool. Two of my older dogs wear the collars because i have a 6 dog and its available although i cant tell you the last time i used it on either one of them. The other reason i think tone is a good thing is it keeps some people who are button crazy from lighting there dogs up every two seconds it gives them something to push so they think they have control of there dogs if only we could take the shock function off there dogs would be a lot better off. Shock collars are great TOOLS but shouldn't be used by people with no self control, common sense, or lack of anything else that would cause them to use the system inappropriately. AND yes to answer the original question you are fine just go slow and teach in the yard or field with no distractions at first.

When my wife calls me. I would rather she uses the tone instead of the shock. I learn very quick! :?:
