A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
bunny, that is how some of the big hounds started. for example look at the plott hounds who were brought here by the Johannes Plott from germany. but i guess maybe just POG would be a better idea.
In keeping with the patch humor: Does anyone know why patch hounds NEVER learn to swim. (small pause). They don't have to. They all walk on water (small grin)
ya after an all week battle i figure its time to have fun....Its like chevy or ford, miracle whip or mayonnaise, remington or benneli its all about preference and youll never win. I own a patch, half patch, and a heinz 57 i love all my dogs and i love them patch hounds and plan on getting a few more. What works for some may not for another. Im not on here bashing your hounds so dont get on here and bash the patch hounds.
Andy, I too own a full patch hound. But most of the time I run is with my buddy who owns 2 grade dogs a dog that goes back to old craine stuff and one that has some birch lake in it. I am not bloodline blind. When we put the 5 together it is one heck of a pack. Not just because I have a patch in it but because they all are good dogs with their own strengths and weaknesses. I do really enjoy when sidebyside brings his patch up and runs with me though. Those 2 can really put a smile on your face.
Hey Dave,
This my summary of what I think has been posted about our threads.
I still have no definative answer to my question about outcrosses. Some have posted with Big exclamation marks about 100% pure is 100%pure,that there is some one with an expert opinion that has 100% pure dogs.
WELL let them put a pedigree on!!!
There has been some that has posted and critized a dead man for liveing in the middle of the woods and doing his evedently, life long love of raiseing ,training, and continualy trying to better the PATCH bereed.
Us patch breedrs are proud of what we raise and I for one do not bash another breed of hounds. There was a reply about bone yards and culls, I have three in Ga, and three in Mi, that have ,bones and culls in them, which have some high priced culls i bought in them. There are some that buy culls ,keep them for a few days and all of a sudden their excellent dogs .
I have an e/m address, a phone 706 349 7429, and I can give you directions to my house if you want to talk face to face or run hounds. You can also PM me. To those who continually bash and talk about a subject you have no knowledge about, your intelligence, literacey, and comprehension levels are Nill and Void.
The Patch breed was not started from Grade dogs. The lineage has been documented with registery .If you have the knowledge you can check it out.
Like another post by the name of !!!!!!! enough from me.
Well i was going to just sit back and read this, but now i think ill put in my two cents.I feel patch dogs are something special. In my honest opinion i have not seen many dogs run that i would trade for my patch dogs I own.. now i have seen dogs that can run better but when it comes time to get them to handle or be quiet in the box it wasnt happening. now some electric would have probably taken care of that but i did not feel they were all around better dogs. most of the time when people bash the patch dogs its becouse they have run with some bad ones. when you have something that has been around for so long some people will take it in the wrong direction most will keep it strait but some will manage to screw it up. some people use these dogs as profit instead of bettering the breed and they are the ones who screw it up. next people always bring up color. i have lemon and white and red and white i hope i get tri color pups some day. most people think any lemon and white beagle is a patch. its not.. If a person is stuck on patch dogs being breed for color at least most of the white dogs can run a rabbit. I have an almost white female ill run with any one. I feel its better to line breed and continue what works than breed to every flavor of the week hunt winner that comes along. I trial some and we have all got beat by dogs that we know are not a true rabbit dog. now that i have stired the pot i will sign my name and go run my dogs.
I own a one year old lemon and white Patch male. He stays in the house with us. He is the first beagle I ever owned. I had a complete blank canvas to judge this dog when I got him. So here it goes: Does his line control frustrate me at times? Yes. Will he hunt untill he's bloody and I'm too tired from walking? Yes. Does he come when I call him? Yes. Does he jump in the nastiest, thorniest briar to jump a rabbit. Yes. Do I get alot of compliments from non-beaglers about his appearance. Yes. Does he let my young kids pull at his ears, tail and whatever else they can get there hands on!? Yes. Does he go in his crate at 8PM and not make a peep till 730AM. Yes. Did he have all the instinct and tools to be rabbit crazy at 5 months? Yes. Would I trade him for the world? NO.
I may have a different perspective because he's in the house. I often wonder if I would get ALL the same qualities out of another line. Maybe I would. I know this is beagling/trialing/hunting board but I think a non-hunter could get a Patch and they would be a great companion/house pet.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that you have to look at the entire dog to judge there quality.
I like my dog. He is not a tool to me. If he stopped running rabbits tommorow, I would still feed him. I just would go get a beagle that would! Thanks, Tim
Who in Michigan owns a "pure" patch hound. i.e.; no out crosses for at least 5 generations or more. I would like to run with them just for the experience. I will even try to buy a young one if they are as good as the patch aficionados say they are. I have a Branko here that isn't a year old yet. He has a lot of white on him so I would want another white male to go with him. I will pay for gas and food and drink. You bring only the dogs.
I forgot to say that I will pay up front and am available any time. I don't work and have very little life other than dogs. I enjoy meeting passionate people when it comes to their beagles. I also have weedeater pup and a haunted hill bred pup. Both will do it big time.
