A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
You feed your dogs before the hunt? Thats one thing I'd never do. They're always slower and lathargic after eating and will throw up the food from the running anyway if they're going hard.
I feed mine everymorning whether Im hunting, just running or even trialing, and I have not noticed any of mine being slower and lethargic. In fact I think it gives them the energy to compete at a high level over the course of the day. I won the Juvenile Diabetes Hunt last month and also a club hunt the week before with my Chief dog and he was fed both mornings just like any other day and he did alright. Of course that is just my opinion and I would guess all dogs would react differently in different situations.

It is best to feed the same time every day. I do not know of any health benefit to skipping a feeding other than special situations as indicated by a vet for special procedures such as surgery. Keeping a dog healthy will give you optimum performance in the long run. Feeding immediately before running could cause possible health risks. Bloat is an example! The digestive process also requires blood supply to the stomach to support the digestive process. I feed in the evening so I do not know how long to wait after feeding. Pups require several feedings per day dependent on their age so I feed a young pup after its early AM run. In the afternoon at least a couple hours before its PM run, and again after its PM run. I believe a dogs intensity and hunt desire are genetic.
