My Dad told me this story when I first got into beagles and rabbit hunting.:

My grand daddy had a pack of five beagles, and according to him and my dad they were the real deal. Well, one day while hunting my granddad was on the outside of a thicket and ole Crip was sitting by his feet. Another fellow who was hunting with them for the first time noticed that four of the five were hunting hard. He said to my grandad "Floyd you ought to shoot this dog he doen't hunt." Granddaddy's reply was just hold on and wait to they jump. It wasn't long before the others jumped a rabbit, and started running, ole Crip just stood up, and sprinted to the pack and soon it was on like neckbone. After the race the other fellow said "Floyd, I understand why you don't care if he hunts, that SOB can run a rabbit like no other I have ever seen." Need less to say that Crip was a check dog. He always knew what the rabbit did and it did not take long for him to recover the track.

There are people on this board that might get rid of a dog like that because he showed absolutely no hunt, and thats alright, to each his own. To be quite honest, if I got several that hunt good and jump rabbits, and I got one that don't hunt very well but can run the heck out of a rabbit that's fine with me.

Pete,

Great point! I agree and myself and hunting buddies have that pack. Now I won't takem' sittin'
long if at all, but average hunt and super tracking are okay with me. It takes some to jump them
out and some to run them hard. I would love the whole package, but they aren't all the whole package.
Gotta hunt the best you can and have great time doin' it!
