first off joey let me say I have never won a field trial, ribbon or had a dog with four names, but this topic always tickles me a bit about young dogs at five months old etc . Its always what am I doing wrong, nothing if you are letting your dog develop at there own pace. ever see a kid start teeball and hit home runs at every bat. and if you ask the question how long does it take for a rabbit dog to reach its peak you will hear the answer three to four years. Messing with pups is always hit and miss. but thats the fun of training pups watching them develop and then watching them turn on the light to becoming a rabbit dog.
Re: I'm I doing something wrong young dog to pack Now Video Upd
i would get a different blood line of dogs don't believe the pups is gonna want the front doesn't have the sense to know to pull up will mess up a lot of races by pulling dogs back if they are out in front of him and come into a check if they pull easily. Either run him by himself or get rid of him.

Never thought of it that way. You make a good point. makes sense.bluemouse wrote:first off joey let me say I have never won a field trial, ribbon or had a dog with four names, but this topic always tickles me a bit about young dogs at five months old etc . As far as the doing wrong part. I was meaning my technique on getting him to pack.
Re: I'm I doing something wrong young dog to pack Now Video Upd
I see where you are coming from with that. Yes he doesn't pull up next to my slower Lisa dog. She seemed to be going at a slow enough pace for a 7month old male to keep up. Lisa wasn't really moving that fast last night. Nice and easy.bradley wrote:i would get a different blood line of dogs don't believe the pups is gonna want the front doesn't have the sense to know to pull up will mess up a lot of races by pulling dogs back if they are out in front of him and come into a check if they pull easily. Joey let me ask you this, how many rabbits has this pup had in front of him, or how many outings has this pup made to the field.
Re: I'm I doing something wrong young dog to pack Now Video Upd
well he's been running since 5-1/2 and he is now 7 monthes old. Not really sure how many outings. More runs by himself than brace. At first we tried with all the dogs. That wasn't working now we are bracing with lisa cause she is more slower and friendly with Odie. She licks him up.....lmao
Rabbits ran = alot
that place we run is overran with rabbits almost to many.
If I had to guess I'd say maybe around 50 maybe less maybe more. Not circling now just run for a short distance.
last night we probably ran 10-12 different rabbits in an hour on that property. They jump and run and go on the other side of a fence. So once they reach the fence we pull the dogs off and go find them another. Its hard for them to actually circle a rabbit on that property cause of that fence.
Now the first spot we ran last night. The dogs ran 2 different rabbits. 1 for a good while thru the woods and around then the other didn't last very long of a run. That spot has some sort of hill the rabbits run to. Like a steep hill.

That is my thoughts also although he should pick up more speed once he puts it all together but he seems like he will be medium speed at best to me,,JMO,,You could try to kennel him with your dogs for a while and see if that helps because right now he is too independent to pack with them and try to run his own rabbit.

I have offered to kennel with mine. But Odie is a Inside dog. Mine outside in the kennel. He may bark his arse off all night long or something.
Plus he is not use to being kenneled up. Have no idea how he'd handle it. But its still not out of the question

If he is not pulling up and running after running 50 rabbits. In my opinion he is as fast as he will be. By 50 rabbits they should be packing and pulling pretty good. I go by how many races or rabbits they have been on more so than age. I have two young males that are showing me bits and pieces of what is to come as they get more experience. The fastest one has not run 50 rabbits yet. He will get better little by little every 10 rabbits he runs, but his running speed will not change. If anything he will slow down and work a little more carefully when he realizes that he will not be easily out run by his pack mates.
Where's the earth shattering kaboom ?
Re: I'm I doing something wrong young dog to pack Now Video Upd
every time we run at that place he runs 6 to 8 rabbits something like that. I never really keep actual count. Just so many jump. Heck we jump em just walking thru. I spotted one before we got out of the truck sitting on the edge.
THEY ARE SHORT RUNS THOUGH
When the rabbit cross's the fence we move away from the area cause traffic is nearby we don't want the hounds on the other side of the fence. Thats why all the different rabbits.
the place is like a giant running pen
lets just say he ran 5 different rabbits every time out and he has been out lets say 10times = 50 rabbits
Might be less I don't know. Just guessing maybe 30 rabbits ran. Still he's been on a fair amount of runs. My point is he knows what rabbit sent is and he barks good on the scent line. So.........

I wouldn't solo him much anymore, just keep taking him out, if he's got the brains he will eventually go with them. I have a male that is independent as well, I just got good info to pack him up more. He goes to the dogs good, but at times, tries and does it by himself.

Joey i watched your video and it lookes to me the pup is doing fine. You have only had him in the bushes for 1 !/2 months. I noticed in the first video you had him on a string trying to get him excited, to me I would try it the other way let the pup get on a rabbit then turn the other dog loose so the pup is not at a disadvantage. think about this these are the first outings for young pups they are sniffing around and smelling all kinds of new scents mice, birds, frog, snails, other animals, flowers, etc. what do you think is going through his little mind it surely not rabbit only because he's not that developed yet. as for as not soloing this pup I would feed him all the rabbit tracks he wants and he he wants to be a puppy let him because training should be fun at this age of his life. It still tickles me to hear suggestion of getting another blood line or don't solo after seeing ten minutes of video, if I could tell that much after so little video and have never seen the pup in person I could get a show next to the dog whisper.
Re: I'm I doing something wrong young dog to pack Now Video Upd
we tried both ways. Held my dog lisa on the leash then the pup on the leash. Both ways.
We are taking him out again Sat and sunday morning with my Lisa dog. Keep bracing them. We defiantly are not going to give up. We are going to try and try again till he works together with lisa. Then I'll throw in another dog. See what happens.

Something else you might have not thought about Joey is the short races. I have seen young hounds give up on tracks after a short race because that was all they got to run. I have also seen some older hounds that way to because that's all they were allowed to run.
If I were you, I would take him out with your pack on some long hard runs and the sound of all that music will most likely draw him in when can't run one by himself. I would do this everytime out and sooner or later he will have to fall in a race. I have done this before and it has worked for me.
Good luck with your training experiences.

John, I have a great uncle who passed several years ago who was a member/secretary of the Webster and New Eagle beagle clubs in Pa. south of Pittsburgh. If you frequented brace trials in the early 70's you may have met him. I used to go visit when a teenager and watch his hounds run on club grounds, but he gunned over his dogs. Anyone, John or anyone else know or remember him? I would like to hear some stories, as he was quite a character. I still have a Webster Beagle Club jacket of his here.
