Not trying to start a thing here .Okay?Turbo was by most people's recollections a real nice rabbit dog and it goes without saying that he has produced some outstanding rabbit dogs.Seems that I've heard it said that Don really struggled to get him to leave the deer alone and that he never really did get him "dead" broke.

DRamey wrote:Bev, interesting that the info you have on Turbo is that he didn't have blazing speed. I have seen a couple of hounds out of him by different females and both were the fastest beagles I have ever seen run a rabbit, and were surprisingly clean for the foot they displayed and the conditions hounds have to run in here in eastern Ky. I know that he threw powerful check hounds and clean running hounds, but I wonder if the foot I saw was coincidental, or if he put it in his pups from a generation back? Opinions and personal observations welcome, keep them positive and informative, please.
David, you may have answered your own question. Turbo himself may not have had blazing speed, but you weren't watching Turbo; you were watching his offspring, and we all know that foot is the easiest thing to put in or take out. I'd guess he was bred to some high-octane bitches, or he may have passed a "fast gene" down from some of his ancestors. Just speculation on my part, I didn't know the dog really. I have seen and owned some direct sons and daughters of Turbo, and I'm told they ran much like him. Not a bad thing in my book.

My Starbuck hound, wherever he is these days, ran one of the best rabbits at a speed of 7 - 8 I ever saw. He too, couldn't resist the deers, and without a good place to break him, I let him go to someone who did. He was extremely good on a rabbit, though, and loved the gun. Sometimes that "gameyness" is a double-edged sword. Usually gamey hounds are the ones with the most desire. He had more desire than any dog I've owned to date, and when the leads came out, he would scale a 6-foot chainlink kennel, find the breach in the wooden privacy fence, and be waiting at the tailgate, lol.

On the foot thing again, my old Dolly bitch (12 years old now) was extremely fast -- much faster than her sire I'm told, but then I was also told that Goose Creek Sam always threw hounds faster than he no matter what he was bred to. *shrugs*

On Turbo's blueticking and bluetick off-spring, and all that jazz, I've read where the blutick and lemon genes were the same. I dunno, but if Turbo had both in his background, and bred to a tri-color bitch with those genes in the background, good chance on the double recessive thing maybe? I bred Starbuck to a tri-color bitch that was mostly white. She was a granddaughter of Jack on top and Northern Tracker on bottom. The pups were 3 bluetick, redtick, and red/white. Didn't get a tri-color in the bunch. The little boy in Chief Longhair's avatar is holding one of those pups.

Thanks for the reply, Bev, makes sense. No doubt, he lives in his offspring no matter what. I'm sure it was a privilege to own such a hound, absolutely a once in a lifetime hound. Color has always been a mystery to me, and I must apologize to those who post lengthy explanations as to the genetics involved, as I get lost after about a half a paragraph. I have a lemon/white male,Northway, Reffett's Sampson breeding, wh has thrown nothing but b/w/t pups. I have never bred my bluetick male, so I don't have firstand experience, other than what I have seen from others, that the bluetick coloration seems to fight through unexpectedly sometimes, and that is about as much as my brain can muster!
