Mike Yates told me in over 30 years with is paches, he never broke a hound off deer. If they'd run deer, he sold them to the deer camps around him for $100. If there was ever a chance to raise a deer proof line, that was it.
Some hounds have it in their nature to stick to one game once started, others have trouble remembering, and some never learn or just don't care.

I have a dog in my kennel that is 7 years old and has never ran off game. He has ran rabbits right by deer many times and never broke stride. He has had deer jump within 5 feet of him while he was hunting, he never looked up. Having said all that, the only thing I would say for sure is he has been natural broke up to today. If he runs off game tomorrow, does that mean, he wasn't naturally broke ever or he was naturally broke for 7 years?

As I was saying, If you can get them running rabbits as much as possible before they encounter deer up close you have a great chance that they will not run the deer.
I would find it hard to believe that while you were trying to jump a rabbit for your pup to get them started and were enticing him/her to get one up. That if a deer were to suddenly be there and the pup got a good wiff of it, that it wouldn't take it. This is my worry while starting hounds where I do because there are more deer that hare on the back 2000 acres. Only in spots there are a few hare in a 5-10 acre are and the deer frequent those spots alot.
Get the rabbit running hours on them asap and I will not have to worry much about deer runs, I know that.
We don't use/have training pens up here at all either.

alot of dogs may never start a deer race but if given the chance to run in a deer race that another dog started id say 90% of the dogs would join in or at least go with them, unless they have been pressure broke

was gun hunting this year with a few people and they had dogs they thought highly of as well as me
i had a female that started a deer race and there dogs fell right in and run and one of those dogs took over
and leading the pack of 6 or 7, one of the dogs was a real good rabbit dog that has never run any off and was about 8 or 10 years old and he was right there also
so id say no on the 7 year old dog being broke , even if they have been broke all there life or thought they was if they run them once they have probally just never had a good enough chance before
all though they may never start or run one by there selfs
its really hard for a pack dog like a beagle to not join a runnin pack

the race started at the hole at the end of a rabbit race and went about 100 yards before somebody shocked the dog that started the race. 3 dogs were giving mouth . all the dogs were there because they had just holed up a rabbit 3 were runninga 6 point . i jumped the deer and it ran into the area the dogs had JUST HOLED UP. this dog has turned down a large pack deer race of 30 or so dogs. ran in 2 different countrys and with a lot of trade dogs and deer dogs and hasnt run 1 yet. and least they werent humping each other all day.

huh ok
not the way i seen it
and they was running a doe when i seen them
yeah i shocked my dog that started it i dont have a problem realizing the obvious
and for the humpin i didnt know that female was comin in heat
and for the one that was doing the humpin like all the other dogs that day looked terrable but is probally one the baddest 2 year old males to ever run as far as im conserned and many others.
you remember him he was the on that made a race look like a split when everything over run it really bad but him and he was 200 feet down the track before anything pulled there head up
no hard feelings
just 2 different opioins
