As someone on another board posted years ago.
"I feed my dogs beef, you don't see them running cows do you".
Feeding them deer has nothing to do with running deer.

I know thanks ;) i just dont do it

Beagle crazy..... I can legally kill three deer a day for the entire season which runs from the first part of Oct. to the first part of Jan. plus what my friends shoot and don't want. I keep only the best parts for myself and the hounds get the rest. This way we both benefit and no meat goes to waste.
As far as those of you that think hounds will run deer if they eat it, must be rookies. Been doing this for years and it works for ME!

My farm borders 33,000 acres of almost land locked state land and deer have become a big problem. We average 30- 40 deer a year and process all of it ourselves. Everything eats well around here. lol

I love to deer hunt, but I don't like deer at all. I kill them and have them ground up and then I supplement my dog food with the ground deer during the winter months. I only killed two deer last year because I don't know a lot of folks in ohio that like deer. When I lived in NC and GA I had a waiting list of folks and I would routinely kill 9 or 10 deer a year and give them all away. I will eat deer jerky and that is about it. I just don't care for it or rabbit either. I didn't kill many rabbits last year because I didn't have people to give them to. That has changed this year so the ohio bunnies will catch hell now. Iowa, Ga, and alabama bunnies too. LOL

Well RiverBottom, Just for the record no I wasn't kidding. I do understand that dogs eat raw meat naturally, I feed my hounds raw chicken once a week. I know what a carnivore is. But this was my thinking and keep in mind it was only my thinking based on what I have heard concerning a hound having to much protien and not enough fat in their diet and that was that it could cause liver problems from not being able to get rid of all of it through the complete digestion process. I see your point and if you have been doing it for 30 years then I guess I was wrong and am not afraid to admit it. I am like most people in that I am wrong alot but some refuse to see it in theirselves ( not pointing any fingers just a general observation with people that I deal with personally) I just don't think it would be good to feed a hound nothing but deer meat because of the low fat and high Iron content, meerly my opinion and it may be wrong. I do feed my deer scraps to my hounds as a treat during deer season but not everyday of winter just two or three days a year and I am sure they love it but like any other living thing they need a well balanced diet throughout and I think we can agree on that.

Check out this info on the BARF diet for dogs. It has an unfortunate acronym but the article makes sense. The breeder who wrote this breeds top notch German Shepherds for police dogs. I did some research about this diet and it does make sense to me. The main thing they feed is raw chicken wings just because they're available cheap.

I also just had my pup in to be wormed and the vet told me to feed her some raw venison to help her bounce back from the worms. He told me he has seen some amazing things as far as dogs recovering from sickness etc. after being fed venison. I was lucky enough to find a country vet that is a farmboy and houndsman. He has good information from real world experience backed up with medical school education.

As for Iowa it is a good hunt, the best week we have had over the years was killing 126 rabbits in 5 days. I may make a couple of trips out that way this year Joeyman, so maybe we can hook up. I don't know what the rabbit population there will look like this year because there was so much flooding in the spring. I'll make my first trip in November and check it out though.

cool. Yeah let me know. It will only take me a few hours to head up north. I'd make a weekend out of it or something. Get a hotel or something. Drive out the day before. Just as long as it's on a weekend Fri - Sat - Sun will be good for me.

what i do is i have most of my venison thats going to be made into ground burger i have 50% of either hog fat or beef fat mixed into the burger. i do feed a lot to my hounds with good results and that covers the the to much lean meat area and plus it makes really good burger meat for the dinner table which don't make the meat as gamie tasting and gives it more flavor. So i think if your adding some kind of fat to it it shouldn't hurt them at all. We average about 6 to 8 deer a year and it's nice to feed last years left over to the hounds and helps out on the feed bill, plus make extra room in the freezers.
