Maybe that ad was from a youngen who doesn't know any different. All they know is they have want in their eyes but have a champaign taste with a beer pocketbook. That philosophy doesn't really vary among most of us as we want the best we can get for the lowest possible price. I remember when I was a young teenager I spent countless hours looking through hound magazine and newspaper adds with want in my eyes and had saved up the exact same $75.00 dollars from my lunch money as this person. Thing is I found a UKC Registered coon hound in a local paper ad and bought that dog for that $75.00 from the gentleman. I'll also say she was young and just started but she turned out to be a really nice coon hound. She was my first and only dog at that time so she got all the time and attention.

Good point! I didn't think about it being a kid when i posted it. If it is a kid i can completely understand.
wardog your ok it is good point

I didn't get to see the ad but after 3 years, lots of time, and a boatload of money I finally have a pack of dogs that can keep a rabbit on his feet. Oh, did I mention LOTS of time?

I also have a kennel full of dogs that are so, so that I can't hardly give away. I guess it's because a cheap price and an HONEST description keeps buyers away...don't know about y'all but I would rather know what to expect than pay double, triple, or quadruple the price on a dog that someone blows up.

It probably didn't help much that after a summer I got in my head I wanted some big, fast dogs in SPO country. So that has resulted in little help and catching a lot of BS from the local guys. All I would do is  and say wait a few years. Sure can't wait til this gun season, because it looks like those years have come and with a little luck things should only get better!

Guess how this all relates to this ad is that there are more than enough bad guys who will rip off someone (especially a young person) that many are scared to sink hundreds of dollars in a dog. Many say you better go see it run, which is the way to go if you have the priveledge of living in an area that has an abundance of the kind of dogs you want.

I'm sure 90+% of people my age would have quit by now if they waded through half the junk I had to go through and put up with to get some decent hounds.

i agree on one thing its getting herder to find good dogs and when you do what should be the going price. Im looking for a big male or female that has a ton of foot and can run the front end with my pack or my buddies. so that being said what should a dog like that cost.

In MY opinion, a good quality AKC registered hound 2-3 yr old dog should go for 500 and up. It is rediculous to think a beagle is only worth 50 dollars. We as beaglers have let this happen too much and for too many years. I had a man call me saying that he wanted a hound with a ton of hunt, good foot, tight to the line, well handling beagle and didn't want to pay more than 75 dollars for it. I just simply said that I don't have 50 dollar hounds and he was so mad that he said he would tell everyone that I was trying to rip off people for selling good quality hounds at " crazy prices" If you want a hound that someone has invested time in, than you should be willing to pay the price.

Lets do the math here

1. Pup shots, wormer, etc... $40
2. Running time if it is a 3 yr old running dog. 50 days at $ 3.00 per day $150
3 Breeding (If you don't own the male) to a good stud $ 200
4. Food costs lets just say 100 dollars to be cheap to raise a hound to 3 yrs of age

=$ 490.00 on the cheap side Do you get my point?

Here is something i put together about 2yrs ago so some of the prices may be off but it will show you how much we invest in our beagles and why i have no problem asking $200 for a well breed pup and $300 and up for a good running dog.

well i thought i would put some numbers down for some of you to see first we go the route of buying a pup at 6 weeks old and feeding it up to 8 months old to see what you get starting off shots at weeks 8,12,16 = $6.75 at $2.25 a shot
worming at 8,10,12,16,24,32weeks=$6
feed $8 a month feeding a really good food=$64
time at minimum wage$5.15 and hour, 30 mins a day to feed and playwith= 50.4hrs=$259.56
starting a pup i have a training method that takes 7 to 10 weeks depending on the pupand between 28.5hrs to 43.5hrs at $5.15hr=$144.77 to $224
so if you bought that really good pup for $200 bucks and it did work out using my training method at 8 months old you would have a hound ready to join your pack at a price of $681.08 to $760.31 now you wonder why people will ask such prices for broke hounds that hey have put so much time and work into.

now option number 2 raising your own litter to sale from your 2 good dogs presuming you raise one good litter a year.
feeding these 2 fine hounds $10 a month=$120 for the year
worming and heart worm prevention $10 a month=$120 a year
misc vet supplies asuming your like me and do most your own vet work $100
30 mins a day to feed and clean and play with your dogs a day at minimum wage $5.15hr 110hrs= $566.50
running those fine hounds no charge thats the payoff for having such great hounds lol
now puppy time the pups are here asuming there are 5 and they all make it
worm the pups 2,3,4,6 weeks $6
shots at 6 weeks x5=$13.50 at $2.25each
feeding from 4weeks to 6weeks=$15 for a good puppy food
registration papperwork $20 + $2 a pup would be $30
grand total of =$971
so at $200 a pup=$1000 you made a wapin $29 dang where getting rich now lol
but if your like me well your going to keep 2 of those pups so $971 divide by 5=$194.20 in the 2 pups i raised dang i could have bought them for that lol so i keep my 2 and start the through my training at 8 months and what do you know ive got $875.28 to $954.21 in my own 2 pupsthat ive raised from my own dogs.
we all love what we do but you can see theres no money in beagles i don't try to break anyone up but i don't care to ask a good price for my pups i do my homework when i breed and i exspect results just thought id share that with you guys.

Why should Beagles be less then any other hunting dog. Go buy a good coon dog or a duck dog and you are talking about thousands of dollars. The True Rabbit Hunter has alot of money and time put into a good beagle. Raising pups is not easy with all the diseases out there today. Seems like you have to vacinate for more diseases today along with all the wormings it becomes very expensive. I think the General Public believes for years you could buy those good 50.00 running dogs as they did back in the 60's and early 70's and should still get them at that price. Everything has went up an I believe if you find a good dog you like you better be ready to pay the price or be ready to spend alot of 50.00's on useless dogs that will add up to alot of money before you find the one you want. You people out there that does not want to pay the price for a good dog better have good friends with dogs or be ready to stomp the brushpiles yourself and in alot of cases find an good supermarket that sells rabbits.

well said lab when i was a kid i wasted alot of money on those $50 beagles then when i bought a cull from a good breeder for $200 that dog was awsome to me do to the fact the other dogs i were buying where junk that couldn't half way run a rabbit. i don't care to pay the price if its what i want but i also like to try and raise most of my own ive hand picked my kennel and ive paid the prices but its all been worth it saves alot of time and energy.

The best dog that I every seen run a rabbit I got him at the dog pound for 8 dollors. And I ve seen alot of dogs.I just got a dog sat for 50 dollors and the man that sold him paid a thousand for her 5 years ago.She 9 years old and she a little to slow for him.She just right for my pack.I had another man call me two weeks ago and had 5 for a thousand and he pay 3 thousand for them last year. There just to many hunters out there that in it one week and out the next.Pay high price for beagles and then get tired of it and then nearbout give the dogs away. Its been like this as long as I been in beagles.36 years now.

Just paid $250.00 for a 9 week old pup, had know problem doing it, she had the bloodline I wanted and from a Kennel I trusted. Like someone said, thats nothing for a good hound, coonhounds sell for 5 times as much, and I expect results from my dogs just like the other hunters do. I will add that I am not rich by any meens money is tight, but you get what you pay for. I know there are those dogs out there that cost $50.00 and work out good for ya, but they are few and far between.

I don't have any problems paying for the pup i want. I have paid $350 for an 8 month old started female, and $300 for several pups that are out of Turbo males that i like. There are pups going for $600 a pop out there that i would also love to get my hand on. I'm now officially out of the buying days! I have the females that i want and will now focus on them and producing my own line of pups. It has taken me 5 years to find these three and i plan on having as much fun as i can with them :D
