The unofficial death count is 114, though the numbers lie because it isn`t possible to follow all the bloody paw prints of innocent animals that have died in the name of this barbaric "sport."

They have been strangled in towlines, gouged by sleds, suffered liver injury, heart failure, pneumonia and "external myopathy," a condition in which a dog's muscles and organs deteriorate during extreme or prolonged exercise.......this is from 2000....so we can only assume 8 years later...the totals must be in the thousands at 100 a year or so....so you do the math...you keep thinking it's a good sport?,,,I will in-turn think it's cruel TO USE ANY ANIMAL FOR A PERSON TO BOOST HIS OR HER EGO! Yuck! Shannon

Do you think it is cruel to run dogs all day on rabbits?
Some get hit by cars, killed by coyotes, caught in traps, drown after falling through ice, get lost and are never found.
Every time you cast your dog, you are taking a risk that you may never see it alive again.
You guard against that because your dogs are your life.

You think the guys want to see a sled dog fall out of the race?

The most cruel thing you can do is take a well bred dog and not let it do what it was bred to do.

You guys are fighting a losing battle here with Shannon LOL!! Don't you remember last year when the same topic was brought up by the same person?? Well here you go, check out the link: http://americanbeagler.huntingboards.co ... t=iditarod

The thing that is downright laughable about these posts is that animal rights wackos can and are saying the SAME THING about us beaglers!!!!! It's unfortunate but not at all uncommon for beagles to die doing what they love and this is no different than sled dogs. The site you are posting is a glaring example of AR and PETA folks at their best-ignorance, ignorance, and more ignorance.
Haha!! I had to laugh that the sled dog coalition (ie. PETA site) is being run by a group in FLORIDA!! What??!!

Don't blame the sport, Don't blame the sport, Don't blame the sport. Blame the occasional jerk that gets involved in the sport. Blaming the sport is just like blaming the gun or the cigarette, just rediculous. I would like for you to ask yourself if it is the sport or the owner that is to blame.
Once upon a time, a man asked a girl " Will you marry me?" The girl said " NO." and the guy lived happily ever after and ran his dogs as much as he wanted to.

Bev, looking back at my post I realize that I didn't say it the way it was meant. The "changing of the guard" that I was referring to wasn't about the board or even the magazine, but the ARHA itself. I 'spect you to be around for a LOOOOOOOOONG time to come, unless you begin having brain farts like I have on a regular basis!!

I still say that this is a valid place to have this discussion (obviously, because of the lively posts). Shannon, you made a valid point in that people use dogs to boost their own egos. Ego is the origin of hound owners saying things like, "I won that one." or "I got 3rd place," etc. SilverZuk said that it is cruel not to let animals do what they have been bred to do. How do we balance all of that, and what does sled dogging have to do with us? IF we are guilty of accepting the glory for a hound that has torn himself to pieces in briar patches for hours so we can take home a trophy for "US" then we are the guy who mushed his dog to death. IF we,however, take hounds that are bred specifically to be rabbit hounds and leave them in the living room for life or an 8x8 kennel, then we are no better. Everything in life is better enjoyed in moderation, and with giving credit where it is truly due. If you put in hours and hours breeding the best to the best, training and working hounds, your reward should be in bringing the best hound to the field for THE HOUND to do its best. Peta doesn't make distinction between mushers and field trialers. Protesters in Florida who protest the Iditarod are a lot closer to most of us than they are to Alaska. Keep up the discussion, but keep it positive and impersonal.

You critics need to sweep your own back porch before bad rapping someone else. How many Beagles died at EM Classic this past Fall while running in 90 plus degree heat?

If you think houndsmen are close thier dogs you shoud watch mushers with thiers! Most only feed themselves and let no others feed because of the bond. These dogs love to run and live for it as much as a good hound does. So before statements are made about the race and racers understand what is is al about first. If the man did not care about the dogs he could have left it along the trail for wolves or wolverine.

randy in some way I can relate to you, taking care of pets and animals in,but you live in la-la land, so next time you are cutting the fat off your steak ask yourself did this steer die of old age, are if you are eating fish I hope you did not get the one that floated to the top.
