prefer males. but got to have them females. you can run males anytime. females come into heat during gun season or right before the one field trial you were planning on going to. lol

males because like many have said, seems like the females always come in heat right at the time of a big hunt, you put all the gas money, hours out runnin, and then they come in,they are laid up three to four weeks, then it takes a good month getting them back in shape and competitive again,so,on the average,a female is only trial ready about 6 to 8 months out of the year, then take away the summer months, what do ya have?
males run all the time, plus you finish a male and stud him out,you may get a portion of your money back too.

For me I think some females start a little earlier and handle a little easier and true they are running in trials alot less then males but for hunting rabbits I enjoy running a female as far as competetion I prefer males owning a great stud dog has big advantages you have the availbility to get a pup out of just about any female that comes to breed to your dog

females
Females. Less hassel in the kennel, no marking , less fighting. Get down to business faster in the field, seem to take to handling easier

I don't believe that is allowed is it? I thought there were rules against running a bitch in heat during a field trial but maybe that was only in combined sex trials. ????

Brad I would say that it depends on thier breeding. I have seen some females that are as bullheaded as males, and I have a male right now that is as easy going as there is. Yes he marks everything that sits still, including my leg, but he is a joy to be around. So I would say females most of the time, but there are some quality breedings of dogs that are known to handle better than others.

Not 100% sure on AKC or PKC but as far as UKC and ARHA your female will be Scratched "picked up" if she is in heat I would assume it would be the same across the board just due to some females will act a little agressive sometimes towards other females when they are in and occasionally will mount or be mounted by another femaleANTHONY KERR wrote:I know it is prohibited in ARHA and probably UKC, but as you said they do not separate the sexes. I know of some AKC trials that are run in big pens. I don't see it being a distraction to another female. Just wondering.
