Not only has it gotten hot but I have had 3 snakebites plus a copperhead popped at my ankle a couple of days ago.he was laying beside one of my tater piles in my running pen,he rattled like a rattler, thats the only reason he missed his mark,i had to change my shorts!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have seen more snakes this year than normal!!

running in hot temps

Post by khensler01 »

Vet told me when a dog gets overheated it does kidney damage.so I'm just taking my pup in the field working on handling and letting it get exposed. Hate not running but as soon as this heat breaks and not 73 temp in mornings I will start again. Ken

Just got back from solo running my Branko's Snowflake Belle out behind the house in the "jungle.". She ran a rabbit for over 30 minutes before I pulled her off and had enough sense to slow it down. The rabbit stayed out about 30 yards from her and she ran it across a gravel road twice. She is my anchor and I was impressed. Dry conditions and heat index over 100 degrees. ;)

i went out two nights ago, took 4 dogs, after about an hour and a half i heard my rowdy dog quit runnin in the pack........few minutes later i saw his light comin up the road towards me,he was breating uncontrolably, super fast and could not stop, like he was convulsing,i rubbed him down with water to cool him down,i watched kenny barcus's dog do the same thing one night, scared me to death, now here is one of my dogs doin it........i said the heck with this, called my dogs in and went home........can't win any hunts with a dead dog,and layin them up till the heat wave is over wont hurt them.............aint no way i am runnin right now,i like my dogs alive to well.

I agree Danny. It is too hot for any extended running but I like to just let them out solo for no more than 45 minutes each to exercise, then back up to the pen.

It was 102 here yesterday and is supposed to be 103 today. We are going to get a break Saturday when the "cold" front drops the temp to a brisk 93. I think mine will lay in the shade for a few days.
NC Hunter keep those snakes down there in the flat lands. We see a few copperheads here from time to time, but I ran up on a yellow jacket nest once. They burnt me and the dogs good. With it dry they are getting in drink cans. I saw a guy drink one and his lips swelled so big I thought they would explode. He was pony lipped. He said "boes ith loo baaa maaan".

It was still 90 in Richmond at 11 last night...heat index was still up there around 100. No running for me or the dogs.

I feel sorry for the high school kids in sports. My son has had to walk 18 holes everyday this week with the heat index at or near 100 degrees. That is asking a lot to walk the hillsides of Ohio for 4 to 5 hours carrying a bag, clubs and gear. He's a tuff little sheeat though so I don't worry about him too much. What don't kill him will make him stronger. Hell, I remember when I was a teen in the United States Navy loading bombs, missles, guns and rockets 12 on 12 off 7 days a week around Gitmo, Cuba in 100 degree temps aboard the USS America. It never killed me either. ;)

your lucky havin good runnin in your back yard,i have to drive 30 min to good runnin.

45 to an hour tops is about it,i read on another post about people braggin how their dogs ran 10 hrs in 96 deg weather..........they are doin more hurt than good, dogs burn calories just like we do,and if your not putting the right calories from protien and fat back in their body, they break down muscle.
