I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH ONE OF MY DOGS,SENT THE DOG TO TIM BOYER (TBOY) AND HE CAME BACK A DIFFERENT HOUND,SPITTING A LOT MORE MOUTH,HE SAID HE FED HIM A PEICE OF RAW CHICKEN LIVER AND A TWINKY BEFORE YOU RUN HIM,SO I DO THAT A WEEK BEFORE HUNTS AND HE DAOES FINE,SOME SAY HE WAS SNEEKING OUT ON DOZER IS WHY HE WAS TIGHT,MAY BE,BUT I THINK HE WAS LACKING SOMETHING IN HIS DIET AND THE LIVER DID IT.

BJK brought up a couple of things that I would like to see some discussion on. I have heard of hounds that got tighter as they got older but I have never owned one. All of mine always stayed the same or got looser. I like to have one hound that is a little less conservative (translated: barks a little bit before the rabbit is up) to pull the pack together if it isn't already. Second, I like the idea of correct mouth, but I think correct mouth is realtive to personal preference. Like BJK said, perfection is different for different beaglers. I don't like a hound that will open on an old frosty track but I know some beaglers who believe that if the hound smells rabbit, it should bark. My ideal hound is still one who doesn't bark until the rabbit is up and going, though. Whadda y'all think?

I like a dog with nose to smell the track on a cold morning but tight enough not to open until rabbit is up and moving. The down side is you will have a tight mouthed dog.One that might not open unless he has the front, maybe steals checks and just does not have enough mouth for you.I'v owned all kinds of dogs but prefer what most would call tight.I have not had near the dogs BJK has had (under 30) but the ones that I have owned that were tight at a young age gave more mouth as they got older.
