I agree that even though she don't hunt, she may be able to produce with great success.

I just have a question: What good is a dog if the dern thing don't hunt. Why would anyone have a dog that just laid in the pen to have pups unless it was for money. Now, if someone is in it for the money, then I don't want a dog from them. That's not saying that the dog won't be any good, but I'll take my chances with a hunting bitch.

:?: after reading all of this I'm A bit confused. I know nothing of horses. but what I got from the posts was that these BROOD MARES where GOOD DUE to their GENETICS (PEDIGREE?) . And allthough I'm a proponent of breeding the best to the best the pedigree has alot to do with wether or not I will breed two dogs together. Genetics for horse and genetics for dogs I believe are more alike than we would like to think. I will be the first to say that papers don't run a rabbit . On the other hand if the genetics aren't there than it's like playing the lottery. I have seen where two dogs of exceptional ability where breed and the offspring were no where near waht the parents were. As to the data availabel it may be harder to find and take more of an effort but it is outthere if you want to do the research. the producing power of certain strains,(bloodlines), of beagles are well known. So as for someone using the papers to decide if a dog would make a good cross or not I'm all for it. Would I keep a dog just to breed? NO!! if it doesn't hunt I don't feed it. But If say you had seen the results of a cross with a brood female and it turned out to be exceptional would you not get a pup from the next time given the opurtunity just because the female wa just a brood Bitch? I know I would.

SOmewhere down the line, that worthless dog's traits is going to show up. Otherwise, what good is a pedigree if traits only come from the parents. It may not in one generation but what about the second. I'll take my chances with good dogs breeding good dogs.
