I DON'T THINK A THOUSAND BUCKS FOR A DOMINANT TRIAL DOG IS TOO MUCH,THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN A TRIAL HOUND AND AN EVERY DAY RABBIT DOG AND IF YOU DON'T AGREE YOU MUST NOT TRIAL MUCH.
I trial often an if stament is true you need to find another format i was at the meeting when they said arha was forming to promote the gundog the everyday rabbitdog that the hunter had an it didnt have to be akc just a good hunting dog all of my dogs are hunting dogs first second they are trial dogs an if it takes two dogs one to hunt one to trial then arha/nkc needs to re focus on hunting dogs

THAT IS WHY ARHA IS BROKE DOWN INTO DIFFERENT STYLES,PP,GUNDOG BRACE,BIG PACK,AND LITTLE PACK.

THEY MAY HAVE SET OUT TO PROMOTE THE EVERYDAY GUNDOG BUT THE EVERYDAY GUNDOG DOESN'T LAST LONG IN LP,IT TAKES A SPECIAL DOG TO BE DOMINATE IN LP.I WAS NOT AT THE MEETING AND HOW MANY YEARS AGO WAS THAT?
ALL I KNOW IS IT TAKES A FAST,AGRESSIVE DOG WITH A COMPETETIVE STREAK IN IT TO COMPETE IN LP.WHEN CONDITIONS ARE RIGHT AND THE RUNNIN IS GOOD THE AVERAGE GUNDOG DOESN'T STAND A CHANCE.THAT IS WHY A TOUGH DOG IS PRICED IN THE THOUSANDS AND A GOOD GUNDOG IS 300.

I HERE GUYS ALL THE TIME TALK ABOUT DOGS THAT DONT MAKE THE CUT AS TRIAL DOGS THAY SAY,"IT IS A GOOD GUNDOG BUT NO TRIAL DOG".

I personally think that 1000.oo dollars for a well rounded hound, that you can take out and shoot rabbits over anytime you go hunting is pretty cheep. I breed but i dont sell pups. The simple reason for this is everybody wants that hound that can do it all, but only wants to pay $150 bucks for it. A well bred hound that is trash proof, listens well and runs the fur off of a rabbit or Hare is worth more than $1000.00. Anyone who raises and trains hounds knows how many hours it takes to occomplish this.(To bring out by effort, tTo succeed in reaching a goal) . But this is an honest man selling you an honest hound and it will do what he say's it will. But unfourtunatly there is the other side also, the dishonest breeder.

Thirty years ago an Amish friend sold a grade hunting beagle for $500 and regreted it later. It was a very good dog, but not the best I'd ever seem. Now that was 1975 dollars, that must equate to $2000-2500 or more in 2007 for a grade dog.

Fair market value is the price a person that doesn't have to sell will sell for and a person that doesn't have to buy is willing to pay.

I'd say a hound is worth what someones willing to pay for it..! Personally, running dogs, working with pups, is all a hobby to me and I don't expect to re-coup that time...(that would be like expecting someone to pay me for playing golf, or watching nascar races,LOL!)...anyways, I would rather give away a hound/pup to a good hunting home than sell one to who knows what...for me it's an inexpensive hobby, and I enjoy getting people involved by giving hounds away once in awhile...

I'd have to say that using field trial success to set prices is not a perfect science. I respect that some people put a lot of importance on trials, but there are just as many, if not more, beaglers who place little or no importance on trials. I have trialed a lot in the past, but have backed off a lot in the past few years. Saying a dog is worth less because he is "only" a good gundog is just wrong. I've got a good gundog in my kennel now that is not a good trial dog. She's too slow for Large Pack, too fast for SPO, too cold-nosed for ARHA LP. She may be competitive in other formats but there are none available for me to run her in. But it really doesn't matter to me anyway. She is just as valuable to me as any successful trial dog that I ever owned or seen.
