Thanks Rick and everyone for the kind words. The American Beagler has always been for the promotion of the Beagle as a hunting hound. This makes my stance on hunting ever-present, but I certainly don't have objections to printing info from folks who keep beagles just because they like the breed or compete them in a different arena.

Thanks for hanging in there!

Rick,

What is/was "the 'other beagle magazine' that was almost responsible for the death of a whole registry?"

hey bev, the magazine is fine. i'm with rick on this subject.keep it good for the hunter ,hounds that are gundogs, and field trials that promote a gundog. subjects such as training hounds, managing a running pen, etc. etc. are what i like to see. i particularly like to see printed interveiws with beaglers who have been around for a long time especially those that remained true to breeding a gundog. i wouldn't mind conducting some of these interveiws myself. it would be interesting to talk to many of these people.there are many beaglers out there who have forgotten more about beagles than i will ever know.articles on some of the early hounds are great too. i believe your magazine has covered all of this. only two problems : the magazine is not long enough and it only comes once a month.lol

lee, thanks for the kind words! I said in my very first issue that the magazine was not just for trialers, that I would not forget the strictly rabbit hunters out there. I've tried to keep it that way - a little something for everyone. It's good to be well-rounded and if the magazine has to be specialized in something, then let's just say it's specialized in Beagles. ;)

We have some great interviews coming but could always use more. If you have some ideas for me, I'm all ears. Just rattle my cage at editor@americanbeagler.net

i am real new here, and i really enjoy reading the forum, btw, but i didn't see that question as being that far out of bounds. i think that it is important for the hunting community to not isolate ourselves and become defensive when dealing with non-hunters. many of us were non-hunters at one time. (not me, but i am just lucky.)
i belong to a beagle list where the vast majority of beagle owners are non-hunters,,,, in fact probably 99% of them. a lady ran a story of her beagles doing a hunt and she got a couple of nasty replies. anti's were on the prowl. the nasty replies though, were quickly offset by a torrent of supportive replies, people who said that while they don't hunt, they really enjoy hearing hunting stories and hearing how the beagles work and they enjoyed hearing about beagles doing what they were bred to do. the people asked her to continue sending stories of her pack, that they wanted to hear more. also, interesting to note that many of them mentioned that they didn't hunt but would like to try,,, many didn't know how or didn't have the opportunity. these are beagle owners, and many of them wanted to see how their beagles would react to the situation.
i think it is important to keep those doors open and welcome any of those people into "our pack".

on another note, i finally found a starting pen. after looking high and low, as far away as baton rouge, (some 100 miles from here), i found a fella with one some two miles from my home. he is involved with trialing,,, while i was at his place meeting him, another fella came over who is also a trial person, he is a member of a local beagling club and i now have the opportunity to get involved with a club locally. this fella also deals with black diamond so i now have a dog food connection as well. it certainly was a productive day. i will be bringing my puppy (at least) to him to start for me this friday. thanx to those who tried to help me out.
