TommyG I wasn't dragging you across the coals I was just trying to give you facts about your method. I never once cut you down or called you any names or anything else. I was just letting you know that in many states this is illegal and if you are doing this and your game commision, game warden or what ever it is in you state finds out you will get in trouble. This would be considered EXPOSED BAIT in the trapping regulations. Anywho you can kill all the coyotes you want, anyway you want I don't care but you will never put a dent into the population. Face it they are here to stay.
It does suck that they are killing our expensive rabbit dogs that we have spent countless hours with but coyotes are doing what comes natural to them and that is doing what it takes to survive. (they are second on the food chain ).
You can learn more about trapping coyotes ( the right way ) at http://www.trapperman.com
or calling them to the gun at http://www.predatormasters.com
If you think I drug you across the coals then just metion your method on one of the sites and see what they have to say....LOL
Have a nice day!

IMO, the reason we will never be rid of them is the wildlife agencies. They are still spreading them to areas where they have disappeared. Need proof: A couple of years ago some tree huggers decided we needed "Red Wolves'" in an area where they once roamed. I read a story by some wild life biologist who stated that the Red Wolf was nothing more than a coyote with a reddish color. In fact there were many coyotes/red worlves trapped then separated by their color and moved to the desired location.

I read an article about coyotes last year in the local newspaper. The article was written by the game official who was given the responsibility several years ago of eradicating coyotes from the area. Instead of telling how to eradicate coytes, nintey percent of the article described his admiration for the abilityof the coyote to survive. Sounds similar to making Jane Fonda Secretary of Defense.
I doubt we will ever eradicate them again but somehow they were eradicated from the Eastern US for several years. Of course that was when human beings had more rights than animals.

Hey gus, do you think harassing them enough will move them out of an area, at least for a while????

It would either move them or make them smarter.

That's a good idea until you hook someone's bird dog or coonhound.

The Coon or bird hounds shouldn't be on this land unless they ask,and if they ask I'll tell them about the sets. Coyotes have a year around season here. Nothing in the regs about this kind of set here. Besides do you want rid of coyotes or not, your choise.
As a dogman should be aware of, sometimes dogs refuse to read property lines. Even rabbit dogs will cross a line from time to time.

Bad idea all together. Plus, if you lose or forget one, your dogs could get caught.

I know a former wildlife student who was doing a study of coyotes. They trapped a coyote and put a radio collar around his neck. A few days later they tracked him to record his movements. Once they were close the coyote jumped out of the brush and moved on. A few days later the procedure was repeated. The next time they tried to locate the coyote he was not in the area. They used an airplane to search and found he had moved fifty miles from the release area. That is the problem with trying to wipe them out. Unless the entire population in an area is united in an effort to eliminate them, they continue to move in and fill the void left when we kill a few.

Let me clarify myself. I won't say if I use these sets or not,all I'll say is a person who don't-don't want rid of Coyotes bad enough. This is a very effective method for getting rid of them. It was a suggestion, use it if you think it will work, don't use it if you may catch someones coon or bird dogs.Personaly crewchf I'm with you on the claymores,I've had them come in on my hounds a few times and its realy scary. We had 11 around us and the hounds once, they wanted the hounds.

Coyotes were never in the East until the last few decades. They have migrated here from the west. They filled the void that was left behind when their natural predators (red wolf, bear, etc) were diminished by man. Getting rid of the coyote will be darn near impossible. They are far too adaptable.
The west has been trying to eradicate them for a long time and they are still bountiful. The west has tried trapping, poison, shooting from planes, hunting.......you name it. They still have them.

Nothing wrong with trying though........I enjoy it. :)
