A rabbit doesn't know if the dog chasing it has a square head or pointed and if he has time to stop, turn around and look the dog ain't much anyway in my book. There is no difference in performance based on a dogs shape of head, color or ear length, etc... That is all in the preference of the owner. I have heard people say a chop mouth dog runs faster than a ball or a red dog has a better nose than a tri-color all BS but everybody has an old rumor or wives tale that they like to use and that keeps things interesting.

The breed standard for a beagle refers to them as a miniature foxhound. The head and skull definitions for the beagle and foxhound have the same wording. So, shouldn't a beagle have a head shaped similar to a foxhound? It really doesn't matter to me, I just like one that will run a rabbit to suit me.

Well there are certainly extremes on both sides. In the show ring you will never win with a seriously snipey hound and I do think that look is ugly. BUT I also think snipey is closer to what the "origional" Beagle style was than a block head is.
I don't want my Beagles heads to be either extreme. You want enough muzzle so the Beagle doesn't look pointy nosed but not so short and blocky that you lose that soft expression with the long ears and gentle face.......it is really hard to explain and each Beagler has his own idea of the perfect Beagle head. Hopefully the judges see the beauty in yours!
*What really helps a narrow muzzle is color! A generous serving of white can give the muzzle the appearance of being MUCH fuller. All else being equal pick that pup with the big white muzzle
The other thing I can't stand on some of the Beagles I see competing in the show ring today is bulging eyeballs. How the heck is a buging eyeballed Beagle doing a good job of representing a breed that hunts with it's nose through brush and briars?! That style would never be tolerated around here.
