Names of dogs pulled out of a hat and two dogs assigned a brace number.
Everyone goes out and lines up in a line one beside the other and all start moving forward beating the specially grown undergrowth planted for just such a purpose.
Someone will see a rabbit that has been jumped and will call out Tally Ho and the next brace number will be called to the spot and put on the rabbit. When both dogs are surely smelling the trail, both dogs are turned loose (unsnapped) and the judges and all folks watching will stand around and observe (yes, everyone can see the whole contest) the two dogs to see which one runs the closest and straightest with the least side motion, even the head, and judge it the winner. Winners will be all drawn out together in 2nd series and run two at a time in a brace until by elimination by 3rd or 4th series there are declared a 1st thru ever how many winners.
Best folks you will ever meet, whole families participate and all love beagles. Lots of grandparents with grandchildren too.
Go to one, they will sure make you welcome.
Magic City beagle Club is here in Alabama as well as others. Most beautiful running grounds you will ever see. Great ideas in action. Many have been working on them for over the past 50 years for just the purpose of these trials.
Looking for somebody that still runs traditional brace....

That was a nice reply, John, but not all brace clubs are hospitable. I live 2 mi from a very well known and established brace club. My dad was a 25 yr member there and they let him know that his dogs were not wanted there. If you run a gundog, which my dads and mine are AKC, SPO, style dogs, they will tell you to your face that they would shoot it before they would feed it. Growing up, we did alot of work on the club, dad was a member in good standing, but they made it where we couldn't run our dogs on club grounds. I know several beaglers that have tried to join there, I even got a couple of Brace dogs just so I might join and use the club grounds, but they apparently don't want any "young" guys joining. Needless to say this has left me with a bad taste in my mouth towards brace dogs and clubs in general. I did get a little justice, I obtained permission to run and hunt all of the bordering farm ground on the south side of the club. When they hear my dogs running they load their dogs in a hurry. I was told that they were afraid that their dogs would go to mine and actually start running a rabbit. Its too bad that there has to exist such a wedge between beaglers.
