As a current meat and poultry inspector working for the USDA I'm wondering just where they intend to find the funding for such a project. Congress can not seem to find the funds so the USDA can fully staff inspection positions in the current food processing plants already in operation in the US today. The FDA is even a bigger joke when it comes to inspecting food producing plants as they show up about once every 3 to 5 years. The USDA has jurisdiction over all processing facilities that process meat and or poultry food items and the FDA has jurisdiction for all others but Fish and seafood and I don't know who has that right now. It would appear to me that Food security in this day and age of terrorism would be a far greater priority than to worry about who sold how many dogs at wholesale or retail. I can tell you that our food supply is quite vulnerable to sabotage and the regulations are very difficult to enforce. When given due process it becomes very difficult to shut a facility down even when they have repeated labortory results for positive Salmonella tests in their products. So how are they going to close a business down for selling one more dog than allowed per year when the cattle and hog producers can import as many animals for resale as they desire. Yes, they could be BSE (mad cow) carriers from canada as that's where a lot of the stock comes from. I better stop right here on this one!

More unneeded rules and regulation, but it does justify increased expenditures and the need for fee increases. AKC said, they would do what was neccessary to help create funding for the project they support, now where do they get their money from???

On the bigger picture, what ever happen to down-sizeing Government???
Seems here lately, their growing in leaps and bounds and they've got the hand in everything.
Just heard on the news, NY has gone to random search of folks who look shady, due to the terrorist actions in London. One military type said, 'we'll not let the civil liberties union stand in our way of doing our job. Well guess who ain't going to NY, why, if they found my pea shooter on me, they'd probably detain me so long, I wouldn't make it back home for rabbit season this year. I didn't think we were going for the "military state" type stuff.
Yep, I gotta find me a high spot in one of them swamps up north and get away from all this craziness.
You folks take care...

Why ! The big surprise? The AKC has for years had the attitude that they are the only game in town, it could be that more people is realizing that a well breed and healthy dog Registered with UKC, NKC, and etc. is just as good without the vacumn cleaner sales pitch. They are not liking loosing any of the pie. I would bet that the most of the animals involved in the increase of regulation would not fall into a large section of their registery. Maybe it is getting time that more houndsmen start being a little wider minded on registrys. I know people that want cattle dogs registered in their registry (I cannot recall the name at the time ) and it is very well respected. It is this simple. AKC sees an advantage for their registry. It is a business decision. Most larger organizations could care less about the welfare of a certain group. It bothers me ever time I see any company or organization have a lobbist that means in big bold letters. We are willing to buy you any way we can! We for sure know it doesn't take much for politicans to change their mind. I can for sure think of a dozen things more helpful for the USDA to be doing. OH well . Not sure if I want to laugh or cry!
