Shoot, I am rushing here but IF IT RUPTURES the vet HAS to clean it out and suture it up with a drain or she can get a gut infection that will KILL HER. Sorry, mastitis is WICKED SERIOUS BAD NEWS

I just got thru a case of mastitis (well my gyp did) and a ruptured tit. I caught it early. Dog ran a slight fever went off her food and looked like death warmed over. My vet put her on Clavamox (amoxicillin trihydrate/ clavulanate potassium) 1 tablet twice a day for 10 days. Also gave me some medication to put into the ruptures, sorry but I don't remember what it was but it was a Pfizer product. Yellow liquid that helped close up the ruptures. (3) Never took the pups off of her. Applied warm compresses and in about a week the hardness left, the ruptures quit oozing stuff, and the dog got her appetite back almost immediatly. I asked the vet if it was o.k. if the week old pups were bumping and trying to suck on that tit and she said the rooting would be good for it and the pups wouldn't try very long to suck because the stuff they will get will be foul tasting. Pups are now 4 weeks old, the ruptures are closed and the tit actually is producing milk.

I grew up on a dairy farm and spent lots of time milking cows. Mastitis was a constant problem, seems like we always had one or two cows with it. All we ever did was load them up with antibiotics and strip out the milk every milking. It was important to get ALL the milk out of each quarter. Milk production in that quarter would never be as good as before and cows that had mastitis several times were culled.
I've seen mastitis in dogs and it is the same as in cows, but not nearly as common. Seen lots of times when it ruptured and drained, never had to have any kind of surgery and never seen a cow or dog die from it. Honey Pot, I suspect your vet may have needed a new set of golf clubs or something?

Honeypot, I'll have to call the vet to get the name of that stuff we put into the ruptures, but I'll get that info and post it. She had three rupture points on the second breast from front on her left side. The mastitis "clump" got about as big as a golf ball and she was running about a 103.5 temp when I took her in. She gave her a shot of anti-biotic and sent the clavomox home with her as well as the other stuff. All I had to do was insert the tip (it was about 1" long) into the ruptures, going right into the breast, and fill it up till it started coming out than smeared it around with my finger. She still has little red marks where the ruptures were but they're closed and pups have been nursing. I think the reason it worked out for me was (A) the pups were very young. And (B) I think I caught it as early as possible.VERY INTERESTING!! You had 3 ruptures? How many infected breasts??? I think you need to tell us the name of the product that you used on the ruptures. Tom MN is right VEts are in there to make Money and If they have the edge some will hit you big time. Treat It like this :Meds Amox 250 mg aday and like with cows keep it drained (PUSH THE OLD OUT) until infection clears this will stop rutures. If you catch it late and don't treat it yes it will rupture.Golf ball is not big when two bags are hot and hard thats big. Clean there whelp area and wipe there teats clean this will help.

Re: Mastsis
I knew my bitch had Mastitis before it swelled and strated her right away on 250 MG Amoxi, my pups milked the teat. The infection still thrived and Amoxi did not work on it. When her infection ruptured I squeezed out the pus with a warm wash cloth and thought maybe all was well but she scratched at it or something and tore the whole thing open and dead flesh fell out. You could see inside her. I am certain my vet was doing the right thing at the right time and I am just not willing to mickey mouse around with a ch. bitch and a litter of very valuable puppies.Joe Parrino wrote:Tom MN is right VEts are in there to make Money and If they have the edge some will hit you big time. Honey don't take it that way, hey we all think alot of our hounds with or without Titles,The best thing you could of done at that point was go to your Vet,But I would of not let the pups nurse infection,I would of drained it by hand and it may of not ruptured,it takes about 2 days to start clearning up after you start meds, Supplement feed the litter until, than I put the pups back on the bitch when shes better.Just my Opinion.

Have you ever bred a bitch a second (or more times) after she had an initial bout of Mastitis? My research suggests reoccurance of at least 50% of the time.....

yes We have
No Problem.
But then again we were aware that there could be a problem So watched her close at any sign of Stiffness or Swelling we milked the questionable teat just to make sure everything was flowing as should be..
Raised 7 with no trouble.....
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be
