Beagle puppy prices seem out of whack to me. Not that they are too high.

I'd say the average price of a grade puppy around here out of hunting stock is $100. The average AKC puppy out of hunting stock would go for $150 from any average Joe Smith. While an AKC double FC bred puppy would go for $200 - maybe $250 at the most from a leading breeder and field trailer.

What seems out of whack to me is that beagle puppy prices are so low. Especially, from well known breeders w/ good reputations.

No way a person can PROPERLY raise and sell a pup for 150.00 and not lose money. My time is valuable to me and I expect to be paid for it .If you want a good pup 300.00 is cheap so don't swallow.

Dont swallow? You must have more money than brains -No its evident that you do. The last pup you bought for any amount of money did it happen to come with any sort of guarantee that in a years time you will be able to take it out and kill rabbits in front of it? If it did please enclose a name and address of the seller I need to talk to him, Have you ever taken three hundred plus dollars and more importantly at least a years time possibly two or more and threw it away! If you said yes then please re-read the 2nd sentence of this reply. Kurt

The price of pups is going up because of paper chasers, vanity is all you can call it. I don't think 150 is to much for a pup AKC or not as long as its out of good dogs. 300 is to much for a pup that you don't know if its going to make it as a hunting hound,or please you if it does. So shop around and you'll find some great AKC pups for 100,there out there, and remember a proven champion may noy be a proven stud or dame, they may have it but not throw it in there pups. If I were going to pay over 150 and triled I get a UKC incentive fund pup and if it turns out to be a good hound it will pay for its self plus some.

I think a well breed pup is worth $200-$250.

MOST OF THE TIME WHEN PEOPLE BUY PUPS FOR THAT MUCH ITS MOSTLEY BECAUSE THEY WANT THAT PUP.ME I WOULD NOT PAY NO MORE THAN 150.00 FOR ONE I DONT CARE WHAT HIS BREEDING IS IF HE IS STARTED THEN MAYBE 250.00 OR 300.00.BUT THATS MY 2 CENTS.ALL I CAN SAY IS BUY WHAT YOU WANT YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE IN THIS WORLD.ALSO MOST BREEDERS GET REAL ATTACHED TO THE PUPS.

It's all about having something that someone else wants!!! I don't have a problem paying $200.00 for any pup if it is what I want! I bought two last fall, one for $200 and one for $300. I also sold a coonhound and ten pups for $11,200.00. If you want it! Get out your wallet! If it's priced too high, you'll buy somewhere else, and someone else will buy that same pup and never blink at the price.

B. Trull, everything has gone up from ten years ago. The expense of campaigning a hound has probably tripled. Anyone remember what we were paying for gas 10 years ago? Entry fees...what eight or ten bucks? A 5-hour one-way trip to breed to a chosen male, brucellosis test, stud fee can have you $450 into the litter before they are even born.

Don't take this wrong, but I use to hear the noise - still do to a point, that ARHA and UKC hounds used to be looked down upon or not worth as much much because they supposedly had no pedigrees and they were just "hunters dogs". Well, I don't know about then, but it's not that way anymore. They are some pedigree-packin' hounds these days that ALSO hunt and the breeders have researched what works and what doesn't. They put time and $$$ into their kennels and bloodlines. They have generations of champions behind them in their chosen formats. We see hounds finishing in two and three different registries, and that's no easy feat. I got off on a tangent, sorry...

Anyway, my point was that everything else has gone up and ppl are investing more in their breedings, etc. That would be my best explanation as to why puppies have gone up.

Frankly, I don't see why anyone would buy a puppy, and pedigrees don't chase rabbits. So I'd say add another $250 to your 150.00 and get a good started dog!

I think it would be interesting to know as to how many of the puppies in a high profile pedigree litter actually turn out to be good hunters?

Do breeders ever give a year guarantee that if a puppy doesn't produce in a year they'll take it back??

I have been the gave say 12-15 years. Having said that I have only breed once. When I breed I selectively breed and none of the pups are for sale untill theyn are all started and I see what I have got. then after I reveiw my jurnal that I keep on each pup and from the desire in the feild thani start making the decision of what pup can stay and what can be culled. I have also seen the culled pups run better than the pups I keep after a while. I breed because I need to add something to the line or am really impresseed with the sire. I know it is going to cost me money to do so nut it is still cheaprr than going out and buying pups with differnt blood lined and finding out they arnt worth the food they eat. I would prefer to make my own line of hound and go from that. Thats is just my 2 cents wether it is liked or not thats the way I feel that I am bettering the breed.

pup prices

Bev;
Sure some inflation is going to occur, but gas wasn't 60cents a gallon in 95', and price of field trials should not have an effect on some people who breed as they dont field trial. In those peoples case ,who trial alot , I am sure some prices will get passed along to the buyer, like anything else :D
Buying a pup thou is a gamble, roll of the dice. The pup may not turn out to even hunt, or even worse be really medicore and then still need culled after spending more feed, time etc on it. How many people make a full time living off of beagles. Hmmmm !!! mabye one in Laclede Ill I know of, even Branko does guided hunts to suplant his income.
I just think people have been to loose with their wallets and like stated previously; if their willing to pay that much then that is the price.

Ricko-It would be tough for breeders to give that type of guarantee.Because the breeder would have no control over the pups training.

Ive tried to sell some pups for my buddy that owns a IFC and he cant give them away.,but I see other pups out of that bloodline selling for 300 dollars.I think it depends on how well your dog is known, and if you put the time and money into making them well known then I think you deserve to get a little more for your pups.

Price is determined by : Supply and Demand.

Over the years I raise a litter or two time to time for my own use. I've always kept females mostly and sell the males or excess females I cannot use.If they are in demand or a proven cross I charge accordingly .Don't wanna pay that then I'll start myself and them get my price. I've paid the price for what I wanted in life be it cars or dogs or land.I was raised on and have beleived in what I like to call the Red Fern Work Ethic my whole life.
