I really got started about 37 years ago when I took a chance and mail ordered a dog from Hayes Beagle Farm in Darden, TN. She was $50 and it was all my savings at the time. My dad didn't believe that we could get a good dog that way and would only end up with someone's trash runner.
Well, what a surprise! Dad couldn't believe it either. She turned out to be the best dog in the world! Every weekend for may years, Dad and I were out rabbit hunting. Years later when that dog died, sad day indeed, I sent a letter to Hayes Beagle Farm again only to have it returned, no such address. All good things must come to an end I guess! After that it was a lot of bad luck in getting another good dog. I did manage to get one more good dog, that dad finished out his years hunting behind. I also taught my first born man child how to hunt rabbits behind that dog. My second born man child never had the chance to learn, as he was too young. Lord willing, this fall we'll be getting ourselves a couple more started hounds and pick back-up where we left off! Even mama is excited about her men taking up rabbit hunting again! Hmmm.......wonder why she wants to get us outta the house?
