I had been feeding Diamond (green bag) and also had noticed my hounds looking bad. I switched to The Pride (green bag) and can already tell a difference.

I have a pup who has have the runs for 3 weeks and was feeding the same as the breeder did purina and called the vet and told me to try iams. I asked another beagler and was tols to feed the pup white rice and steak cut up small untill he firms up than try the food the vet recomended. I have started this last night and didnt have beef so i used speed-beef and the pup is firming up already. I know I shouldn't use vennison but I dont think a 9 week old pup can smell deer scent or cooked venni and rice. My question is how long after the pup poops normal should I feed this and the vet sells iams and didnt offer the meat and rice gig to me. I got good advice from a fellow beagler the first time so i think ill try it again since nobody said iams brand. Also I should mix for a while before toataly going off the rice and steak right?

i have tried it all. pedigree, crystal, joy, diamond, and high standard which won out over the others until i fed some black gold for awhile. it was expensive so i switched back to high standard, but it didn't take long to realize it will be worth it to pay the extra money and have have the mess in the kennel and very good action in the food. BLACK GOLD gets my vote!

I know that "something" seemed to happen to the Diamond Hi Energy maroon bag 24/20. I fed it for a good while and really liked it until recently...my hounds went downhill on it quick, I mean within a few bags. I could tell a difference and knew somthing seemed to have changed. So I went back to Pride and remembered why I quit feeding it before...I have a couple of hounds that as soon as they get fed Pride, they get runny stool. So I have bought a couple bags of the green bag Diamond. Verdict is still out on it........but if it dont do well either, I'm gonna try Purina Hi-Pro.........

Darrin,
I've been using Purina Hi Pro for a few months now. The negative for me is that the stools are a little more and a little looser then when I was using black gold, not real bad though. The positive is that my dogs do great on it! The other real positive for me is the price. I can get a 50 pound bag at Sams Club for just over 13.00. Plus I signed up for their rebate program Which after I cash in my rebate points it'll mean I'm paying only around 9 -10 dollars a bag. Thats tough to beat for good food.

I used to feed diamond and hi standard too. Diamond got too expensive and my dogs crapped like geese on hi standard! I found this feed called PKC (professional kennel choice) and my dogs run great on it. Less mess and good looking coats. Run great on it all day every day. Can usually find 26/18 for 13$ to 15$/50lbs

i have tried all kinds of different feed and my vote goes to joy high performance stool is firm n not near as much of it i have my hounds in above ground kennells with wire flooring so i get to see just how much goes to waste my dogs seem to do great on joy their coats are always slick n shiny n they run good on it too with no signs of tireing out n mine gets run 3to4 hours every day when weather permits n i mean when i can get on the hill sometimes the road is a glare of ice n i cant get to our running grounds jb

I agree with swing and the others. Something has changed about the Diamond. We're switching to Black Gold because we've fed it before when we could get it and the hounds did well. I'm beginning to think Diamond is trying to reach the pet market and making their food more "generic" or something. ??? Stools are increasing too. Black Gold still seems to be supporting the working dogs with their formulas and the quality of ingredients so that's what we will be feeding.

A note about corn: Corn is not a bad thing in dog feed. It's where they get the bulk of their energy. It's HOW the corn is added that needs to be watched. Corn meal is the best. It's ground finer and is utilized better. When it just says "ground corn" you have no idea how big the chucks of corn are in it. Rice is a poor substitue for corn as far as the energy goes, so I would only put a dog on the Lamb and rice, or chicken and rice formulas if they were allergic to corn.

Between the two Purina all the way if you want good dog food use Eukanuba it is pricey but you get what you pay for.You get a real hound brush on the beagles tail don'thave to dock them for sure, and they can run day and night.
