Yes I could take them to alabama and they would not run trash. Makes no differance and that is not what I mena when I talk about normal conditions. I am talking about hunting period. My whole line is not trash free but the dogs I keep and breed are. When you putcross you get whatever and have no way of knowing what outcross lines hold. If you really want to be correct, the thread is about trash free dogs. IF I TAKE A DOG AND TRAIN IT TO RUN DEER, THEN DEER ARE NO LONGER CONSIDERED TRASH ARE THEY!! RABBITS AND COON AND POSSUM AND CATS AND ALL THE OTHERS WOULD NOW BE CONSIDERED TRASH AND DEER WOULD BE CONSIDERED THE INTENEDED GAME ANIMAL THEY WERE SUPPOSE TO PURSUE. So you see, your offer proves nothing except that you can train a dog to run deer. If you train them for it, deer would no longer be off game would they!! If I send you to war and tell you to kill the enemy it is no longer considered murder is it!!! If I train a dog on deer, the deer are no longer trash because it is the game I want to run. Good dogs know what you want them to run and these are the kind that won't run deer.

Mason when I touch a dog he automatically improves in value. All I have to do pet one and blow in its ear and the magic happens. This particular bitch would wait until the other dogs had the track and then steal it from them as she had never been hunted alone. I hunted her alone for 6 months and she learned she had to do it herself and she changed into a good solo artist. She is not great in a pack but much better now but I sold her under the c0onditions that she be hunted by herself. As fpr SPO dogs and no nose, yes they have nose but most lack real speed needed to keep the track fresh in frosty or ice conditions. The Short line has powerful noses but can't seem to perform in these winter conditions as I would like. In tough weather they seem to flounder around and bark a lot but not push hard. They want to run every inch and not gamble and reach like a dog needs to do when its really tought going. Yes they are good in 90 degrees and dry weather as I have seen them run a track down a railroad bed in 90 degress and no rain for 2 months just like maybe you have. You get to thinking hey, this dog has a great nose. The same dog in heavy morning snow frost and ice could not push enough to get it done. Wonder why the hare hunters don't use SPO dogs. I wonder?? I guess they are stupid too and don't know a good dog when they see one. Give me a break will ya. I have had most of the SPO lines and if they worked where I live I would have them. What part of that don't you understand?

Ralph,
You telling me that if I got one of your 2 year old dogs that was never shocked and never ran deer that I couldn't get them to run deer?
LOL
In two weeks they would be burning them up.
If they've been broke, it may take a little longer.

most of our dogs never have to be broke , i have never shocked any of the ones i have raised including JAKE OR CANE . i dont know why this is all i know is we have to brak very few and the ones we do break are easy to do so , now that we are breeding some of the AKC LP hare bitches we have ,im not sure if that will change with such an out cross or not .

Ralph blowing in there ear is kinda wierd
I do believe that some know more than most . Who knows maybe ur the dog whisper
. But i also think any dog at any time will run off game , especially if they are out of there element . You bring up several good thoughts . Where do you live anyway?

Think that would depend on your deffinition of sucessfulFarwest wrote:I wonder why none of the most successful breeders don't post on these boards
The guy that wins the most trials doesn't have the time to be on a computer
The guy that breeds the most pups will be spending his time where he sells them
That will only leave the guy that breeds the best pups,, and he just might be on here from time to time
The rest of us don't have to be the "best" inorder to justify our existence

I run the Iowa strain which you have never heard of and the stock goes back to a fellow named LM Watson from northern Mo and some boys in Iowa. Ever hear of dogs called Browntone from northern Mo.? That is about 1/4 to 1/2 of the line and the other goes back about 10 generations of dogs I have had and bred. I bred for line control, nose and levelheadedness and don't like slow dogs who have to run every inch. They must be tough as nails and never quit a track unless it is not runnable for some reason and look good too or they won't get bred here. I never tried to sell dogs so never had to worry about none of that and it let me select without interference. I farm pups out and then hunt with them later to see what they are and the real good ones I would breed. Its been fun and allowed me to have a lots of dogs to choose from because I learned early on that one man can't hardly keep a good line going by himself. My hunting buddies slowly came to realize that you have to have a dog that won't get jerked off the check by idiots and have line control and are anchored to have a good consistant rabbit dog and now most of them have this blood as their main line of dogs. We are not fancy, just rabbit hunters who are particular about what we feed and are quick to send one down the pike if he ain't pulling his weight. I read the introduction when I came on the board and it said it was designed to have an open honest discussion about beagles and it looks like we did just that on this thread. Thanks to all for their opinions and posts and do your very best to breed the good ones.

Jimmy and preacher come up here during season and I will show you rabbit heaven and some dogs. Good rabbit spots are getting harder and harder to find but I still have a few. I just found a new spot that is 3 old balast pits along a defunct railroad and they run about 1/4 mile long and 50 yards wide each and loaded with rabbits and it looks like it going to be a shooting gallery. I would guess there 200 rabbits in them as I ran pups over there in early spring before the babies were born and rabbits were running everywhere. All 3 pits are inside a big bean field and the rabbits will be fat. I can't house you but there is a new and reasonable Super 8 motel about 5 miles from here that you will like. I had men from Indiana, Kentucky and michigan stay there last year and they said it was good. Bring 2 or 3 good dogs and we will see what its all about. Last of novemebr would be the best for you fair weather southern boys as it can get real nasty after that and you might get stuck in a snowdrift. Take care!

Blunder, It did get going didnt it. I know some are more likely to run deer, but around here they are as apt to get a chance on deer as they are rabbits. 9 out of 10 have to be broke from what I have ran. I havent ran everybodys special breeds they have been breeding though.

IMHO
All beagles are an excuse away from running a deer.
Wish I had a dollar for every time I've left a dog crate out over night
