my dogs nails are very long and sharp and gets hooked into the sofa and even sometimes the carpet.
should i clip them?

Yes. You should buy nail clippers special for dogs though. You can usually get them at any pet store or probably even wal-mart. They are designed different so they will cut the nail properly and won't split or crack it. When you cut them, you'll see where the nail fades to a pink color, stay well below that. Our rule is, if we can hear their nails when they walk on the tile floor, we try to cut them. But I don't think its necessary to be that strict with it.

I cut my beagles nails about every 10 days. Then I use the dremel to take off the rough edges. You will need some quick stop or other bleeding stopper (nice gramar) in case you hit the quick. Cheaper than a trip to the vet! The quick is the red part of the nail. If the nail has a hook to it, it is too long! I am a fanatatic about nails and like my beagles nails very short.
