I had a16 month old female that got attacked this summer. She had a 3 inch long cut on the inside of her hind leg. The next evening my friends went back to the same spot called that coyote in and shot it with a rifle. Wish I would have got to shot it!!!! It ended up being a large female that I believe was protecting her den.

Coyotes
BELLS----- DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THEM. They are really getting bad here in southern Ohio. I always make sure the bells are on before putting the dogs on the ground. Russ Rice

yotes
I run bells all the time and had a coyote attack right in front of me! The dogs opened on a hare and the coyote came in quick. Then he chased the dogs back to me. The dogs came within 15 feet of me with the coyote right on them. I shot him with my .410 single shot in the thigh area, his head was too close to my dog so i aimed further back.
After he was hit, he ran into the swamp. Needless to say i was a little shaken and hunted a different spot.
My friend's dog to this day will run to the truck when she smells a coyote!
be careful,

Bells wouldnt help much at my house. My coyotes are not scared of much any thing but a gun. My friend that lives behide my house said he has had them walk 35 yards from him. I always herid they run away from you these will run to you every one says. I havent seen any. Herid them howling once but thats it.

coyote attacks
Boys they are here to stay and they are a major problem in Northern Indiana. I posted this site a couple of years ago after my buddy's dogs were attacked 9lost one) and had 48 replies the first day where guys had lost dogs or had them attacked while running. I talked to a guy who was running state FW area in August. Was in a big weed field. Saw 4 coyotes enter field, killed both dogs and carried them off before they could get to them. This time of year they get very terriorial before mating season.
I have two 5 month old females that I'm half afraid to run. They are crossing alot with sheperds and have little fear of man.
I stay away from large weed fields and I fire a shot as soon as I start to hunt and talk to dogs alot. I also use a whistle to control dogs. But if they are on a long chase, what do you do?
I hunt eastern Iowa and state DNR provides alot of habitat for bunnies. They have long wooded gullies usually not more than 100 yards wide between large corn or bean fields, they cut saplings and make brush piles. Lots of rabbits and haven't seen many coyote tracks.
But here? Don't have an answer. I hate the @#@*!'s and will shoot at evereyone I see but that's like peeing in the ocean!!
We need to go back to trapping or bounty them but our DNR is broke so not a likely happening.
Anyone with an answer --- SHARE !!!!!!!!!!!
Lots a luck!!!

What noises do they make coming in or when they get around your dogs? I am in Maryland and consider myself and avid fox caller for the past 18 years. I have been told that there are no yotes here in St Mary's County yet by the DNR but I run diferent areas and want to know what sounds they produce so I know what to look for as I only 3 females..

I would love to give some suggestions, but won't. A couple years ago this topic was popular and I gave some suggestions and got flamed hard for it.
I love to hunt coyotes. I love it better than rabbit hunting, crappie fishing or any other outdoor sport I partake in.
You will NOT eradicate coyotes from your area, but you can sure keep them in check as well as teach them to respect you and your dogs.
It takes some effort, but it is a blast.
I have almost completely quit rabbit hunting due to such a low population this year in the areas I hunt. Instead I've turned my full attention to coyote hunting right now.
Best of luck to each of you.

I've had some close encounters with cyotes and bobcats! I hunt a farm pretty overpopulated by them, one night my 2 females were out running and I heard one squeel. Went over and checked em out and noticed a small cut on gypsy, but nothing bad, was picking her up dropped her and back on the trail she was. So i let them run another hour or so and then rounded em up. I got home and was doing my once over before i put them up. I noticed gypsy had a swelling the size of a golf ball between her ribcage and her skin. The next morning it had doubled so i took her to the vet. they did surgery and pulled out some briar type material and put a drain on her. after they closed the drain, the swelling came back ( about the size of a baseball!!!) i immediately took her back they had to do another surgery, and they removed a bobcat claw! I couldn't believe it! they also had to remove a lot of infected muscle so she was out for about 4 weeks. luckily the vet didn't charge for the second surgery, because he felt bad he couldn't fix it the first time. Crewchf just so you know #6's will definately do something to a coyote. Saturday after i loaded my dogs up i was heading out and saw 3 coyotes eating the gut pile of a deer that was shot by a hunter all i had was my .410 so i picked one out and shot 3 times. I hit him the 1st and the 3rd for sure. doubt it killed him, but i'm sure he's a little educated lol
